    Review of In Too Deep

    7 / 10

    Introduction

In too Deep tells the story of an undercover cop, Jeff Cole (Omar Epps), who goes deep into the Cincinnati drug trade to bring down a fearsome local drug lord, a man who calls himself God (LL Cool J). As he get’s deeper into the organisation he befriends the gangster and starts seeing him in a different light. Becoming deeply wrapped up in his role his superior officer fears that there will be no way back for Cole as the big bust get’s closer.

    Video

The anamorphic widescreen picture is very clear and detailed. The fact that allot of this film is shot at night does nothing to detract from the clarity of the picture. I didn’t notice any artefacts or grain whatsoever, a top rate transfer.

    Audio

The soundtrack is also used to good effect. The rears are used to good effect and help create a convincing stage. The over riding point you’ll remember about the sound will probably be the bass though. Being set in the American Ghettos the soundtrack is peppered with plenty of suitable music with heavy bass lines that really give your sub a rattle.

    Features

Pretty much the standard waste of time you come to expect on a Region 2 disc. Interactive Menus, Scene Access, Trailer, Music Promo, Filmographies, Production Notes. I suppose I should note that the addition of a music video is not a usual extra for the barren Region 2 releases however, as an extras package, there’s nothing here to impress.

    Conclusion

I have to admit I enjoyed this movie. The story reminded me allot of the 1992 movie Deep Cover (starring Lawrence Fishburne and Jeff Goldblum) where an undercover cop get’s so involved in his alternate character that he can’t snap back to reality and do his job.

The lead character, Jeff Cole (Omar Epps), is well portrayed. Omar Epps does a great job of showing you this character sinking deeper and deeper into the world of Dwayne Gittens/God. The real star for me was LL CoolJ as God. He does an excellent job of portraying a nasty piece of work but also showing incites into the side of him that fiercely wants to protect his friends and family and that also feels he is helping the poor people in his neighbourhood.

The ending is a very tense affair and I won’t ruin it by telling you what happens :).

I did have one problem though, I couldn’t make out allot of what was being said throughout the movie. How can I explain this??? Well you’ve got all your homeboys “yo yo” ‘ing it all over the place and most of it just sounded like gibberish to me :). Given that some of this was also mumbled as well and at times I wished I had turned on the subtitles :).

So overall a good quality DVD of a good movie once again let down by no thought on the extras front. When all’s said and done though you by DVDs for the movie and if this sounds like your cup of tea then I can wholeheartedly recommend it.
