Review of Sex: The Annabel Chong Story

Introduction

After reading the above intro about this disc you could be forgiven for thinking this might be some sort of glamorisation of porn flicks and in particular Miss Chong’s world record but don’t let the cover or blurb fool you at all. This is a deep and very frank documentary about Annabel Chong (not her real name I might add). It looks at every aspect of her personality and explores here reasons for having sex with 251 men in 10 hours. This is a warts ‘n’ all disc so please bare that in mind before you watch it.

Following on from this you might think that this is one tough DVD to review . . . well you’re dead right :P

Video

Being a documentary you get what you expect. Realistic looking images without all of the usual DVD gloss. The disc has a bog standard 4:3 picture that neither surprises or disappoints, erm, and that’s it :).

Audio

Audio is Dolby Digital Stereo 2.0 English and follows the same vein as the picture. It’s a documentary so isn’t there to dazzle or amaze you. It’s simply there so you can hear what’s being said and that’s exactly what it does.

Features

Nothing much here unfortunately. This sort of Documentary would have really benefited from TV spots and newspaper clippings to give you the full flavour of the media coverage surrounding this person however all we get are cast and crew biographies. That said the Biography for Annabel Chong makes very interesting reading and helps pull together some of the information that you pick up on in the documentary itself. If possible read her biography AFTER you have watch the documentary as there is a piece of information left out of the feature that is pretty disturbing.

One thing I will say is thank the powers that be that there is no commentary track featuring the star of the piece. Why? Well read the next section to find out.

Conclusion

I didn’t know what to expect going in to this DVD. I knew it wasn’t a porno movie so it wasn’t a case of me asking to review it simply for some more filth ok :).

This documentary charts her attempt to have sex with 300 men in one day and also explores her upbringing, charting her life right through to present day. As you watch this disc you can’t help but get more intrigued as you here Annabel Chong’s personal justifications for what she did. That intrigue slowly turns into a sad realisation that all is not well in the mind of Miss Chong. Two words – Damaged Goods. This is one seriously disturbed individual and you start to question whether her justifications are simply smoke screens and whether her open act of sexual brashness is simply a barrier trying to protect a terrified individual.

This disc will get you thinking that’s for sure. As it plays out you start to question society and mainstream views on certain subjects but more importantly you wonder how the world we live in can produce someone such as Annabel Chong. I was expecting to reach a point where I would feel sorry for her but that point never came. I felt pity and sorrow for her and when it was all over I actually thought “good riddance to bad rubbish” – hence my delight at their not being a commentary track :).

Now I’m not an overly harsh person nor amazingly judgemental so it has to serve as some sort of praise for the documentary to provoke such thoughts and feelings.

Do I recommend this disc? Well if you are intrigued by what you have read here then most definitely although you do end up wishing for more extras by means of background material. It is very interesting and thought provoking and makes you wonder just how f***ed up this world we live in really is.
