The sparks fly and laughs follow when Rupert Everett and Madonna team up for this irresistibly funny and heartwarming movie directed by John Schlesinger (Midnight Cowboy).
Abbie (Madonna) and her friend Robert (Rupert Everett) would make the perfect couple, except for one small complication: He`s gay.
Well, at least they don`t have to worry about sex messing up their friendship. Or do they? One night, loneliness gets the best of them, and before they can scream "Reality Check", Abbie and Robert become lovers and, ultimately, parents. But when Abbie meets her dream man (Benjamin Bratt) Abbie and Robert`s unconventional family is put to the test.
Can best friends form the best of families, especially when one is gay? The answer emerges with it, warmth, and a bundle of wonderful surprises in The Next Best Thing.

Your Opinions and Comments
I guess it`s time for that lady to realize she might be a really good singer (not my cup of tea, but that`s another thing), but she is NO actress. All the other actors do a good job in this movie, though.
The video transfer is ok. Nothing eye-popping, but I guess it`s a good transfer for that kind of a drama.
The DD 5.1 soundtrack is somehow disappointing and rather flat.
The menus are still.
The extras include an ordinary behind the scenes look and Madonna`s music video.
Bottom line - a nice drama about the possible complications of alternative lifestyles.
Madonna has done wonders with this role, with Rupert Everett as an excellent co star, they work wonderfully together, bringing the screen alive with there chemistry.
All in all the film is an amazing peice of work.
A must buy and see.
