RE: Rent as many DVD`s as you want for £15 a month!!

It does sound like a very good system.
Are all of the movies in region 2 format, as it doesn`t appear to state it on the website and I can only play region 2 movies on my DVD player.

RE: Region 2 DVD`s......

Cheers for that list - I will trawl through it now, finding the cheapest prices.
Kileer - you da man.

RE: Scart Adaptor ?

My SCART socket on my tele isn`t working correctly and would like to plug my DVD player through my VCR. Currently I get a picture that keeps changing brightness (like a pulse).

Can anyone help me find a cable that will allow me to play my DVD`s through my video to my tele.

Cheers

RE: Films that are cut for R2

I am not totally sure how a film can be the same and have to different running times, but it has got something to do with the fps of NTSC and PAL. NTSC runs at 30fps while PAL runs at 24fps. This means that a PAL movie will be slightly shorter due to it having less frames per second - about 4% I beleive.

I hope that this is correct, if it isn`t then can someone please correct me :-p.

RE: Region 2 DVD`s......

Just good hollywood blockbusters really - at cheaper prices than hi-street stores in England.

Any other sites would be much appreciated.

Region 2 DVD`s......

Alright then, where is the best place on the web to purchase region 2 DVD`s?

RE: Home cinema/hi-fi.......

I bet it does sound very strange just having sound coming out of the main speakers without any dialogue. Does the Yamaha give a stereo output then to stop this from happening if you only have 2 speakers?

My current stereo is pants, and really just want to throw it out of the window! I don`t think that I would want to use it for the rear speakers as the speakers themselves are starting to distort and rumble for no apparrent reason - I think that they have been battered over the years.

What sort of DVD player should I be looking out for - I mean do I need to get one with 5.1 outputs on it, or can you run a 5.1 signal through the digital output? I have looked at some of the DVD players with 5.1 outputs on them and they are all about £300 which is definately out of my price range for the time being.

RE: Home cinema/hi-fi.......

If I was to get the Yamaha DSPX620RDS and only mission M74`s (to cut down on the cost) would this system still rock, or is it the 5 speaker setup that MAKES the system. Neon, what happens if you disconnect the center and rear speakers? Does the system fail to impress?

I would ideally like to keep all of the seperates either the same make, or to have similar appearences. The Yamaha AV is gold - does anyone know of any cheap(ish) multiregion CD/DVD player that would be a good match for the Yamaha AV?

I am very new to buying seperates (this would be my first attempt). I currently have a not very good hifi system (aiwa - and believe it or not the CD player has broke ....... lol) and would like to start setting up a new and more powerful sound system.

All of your comments are grately appreciated.

Home cinema/hi-fi.......

I am looking to get a home cinema and Hi-fi setup in my flat. I have been looking at the Yamaha DSP-AX620 as the AV, and mission speakers (M74 - mains, M7C1 - centre and M7DS - rears).
Are these a good combination together? Can anyone please explain why these are good together?

This lot will come to about £700 - £800, and that is stretching my budget a bit. I would also need a DVD player to be able to use the system. Can anyone recommend a DVD player to go with this lot?

How could I make this system into a hi-fi system fairly cheaply (i.e. CD, Tape, Tuner, etc.)

If anyone could suggest a better setup (home cinema, and hifi) that would come to about £600 - £800 then I am all ears.

Thanks in advance,
PiKL

RE: Hifi system ..... or ....... seperates .........?

Cheers guys.....

I am going to get a copy of What HiFi and look into the seperates market. Will probably go to Richersounds and see what they can suggest for me.

Thanks again.

RE: Hifi system ..... or ....... seperates .........?

That is where the problem lies - I would like to have a pretty decent sound system in my flat. The Technics system costs £500 - which (I think) will be a lot cheaper than getting seperates.

I currently don`t have any equipment that I can re-use. I have got a pretty old Awai stereo which I have had for years and now want something a lot better. I would really like a DVD surround setup, which would mean spending a ton of money on seperates - wouldn`t it?

The specifications of the Technics system says that the front speakers are - high 60W, Low 120W. Does this mean anything?

Wouldn`t you say that for someone that doesn`t know that much about hifi units that a component system (the Technics one) is a nice entry into the home cinema scene. I mean after a year (or so) I should know more about the sort of setup that I want, and will be able to start buying seperates.

Plus there is the hassle of getting loads of different units from various places (each with a remote), and making sure that they are all compatible and up to the same high standard. I am sure that If I had a high spec seperates system that the speakers would have to be of a high enough standard as well. Don`t you think that seperates make people run around in circles, always buying something to add to their system that is capable of working with their configuration? Each addition will cost more and more.........

I think that I will stop rabbiting on now................ just one last thing...
If you didn`t know anything about seperates and didn`t have a ton of money to spend then could you see how such a hifi system is a good step into the home cinema market?

Thanks for all of your responses

Hifi system ..... or ....... seperates .........?

I am considering purchasing the Technics SC-DV250 hifi system. Is a system like this better than getting seperates?
It claims to have 360W total output - can anyone explain what this means in lamens terms? Does it just mean that the system will be very loud?

Would it be cheaper, to get an equivalent (or better) seperates setup?

I really want to get a system that can play DVD`s as well as music, and I want it to boom............

If anyone has got this system can you post any comments that you may have on it.

Cheers

RE: TECHNICS SC-DV170

I thank you for your comments on the system.

With my current stereo (a crappy Aiwa) I have got a seperate sub woofer which REALLY lifts the bass. The body of the sound also feels a lot richer and I don`t think that I could go back to a system without a good bass on it. The Technics system (like you said) does already have bass on the main speakers, which is why I am thinking about purchasing it.

If you can afford a sub then I would recommend that you get one - but you should really go and listen to the impact that the sub will have before you buy it. I would have thought that Richer sounds would be able to give you a demonstration.

Do you know if the sub output works for everything or is it just for DVD`s? If you listen to a lot of CD`s, radio, Video input, etc. and the sub doesn`t work with them then you will have to weigh up whether it is worth getting one just for films. I am sure that you could find a slightly cheaper one if it can only be used for films.
If however you can use the sub for everything then I would suggest that you get one as it really does lift the output of the sound, and adds that extra body to it.

Hope that this helps.

RE: TECHNICS SC-DV170

Check out Techtronics - they have got information on how you can get your player modded.............
http://www.techtronics.com/uk/shop/50-technics-sc-dv170-multi-region-dvd-player-system.html

By the way, can you please give me some information about the system. I would have thought that you would have had it for a while now so can you please inform me if you are happy with the product.........
I am considering purchasing a similar technics hifi (SC-DV250 - which is the 170`s successor) and would like to know if you would recommend your system to others.......
Is the DVD playback good?
Have you encountered any DVD discs that don`t play in the system?

Technics SC-DV250 DVD/hifi system.........

I am considering purchasing the aformentioned DVD/hifi unit (SC-DV250), and I was wondering if anyone had any comments on this particular system........?
What is the sound like for DVD movies?
What is the picture quality like?
Have you found any DVD titles that haven`t worked with the player?
Is there anything annoying about the DVD player/hifi system?

I can`t appear to find that much information on the web about it, and would like to hear some views from people that have lived with the system for a bit.

Any comments that anyone can give on this system would be most appreciated.

RE: DTS or DD5.1?

I have seen a loverly DVD player housed in a Technics mini hifi system (SC-DV250) and (although not totally sure) it doesn`t have DTS decoding built in. This puts me in a dilema whether to purchase the system with a built in DVD player or buy a seperate 5 speaker hifi system (or equivalent) and a seperate DVD player.

If Dolby Digital 5.1 is going to go out of the window to DTS then I think that I will weigh up all of the other options - however I have been looking at a lot of the new DVD releases and virtually all of the them have got a DD5.1 soundtrack (even the DTS ones).

Would you buy a DVD player without DTS decoding on?

DTS or DD5.1?

I am wondering about the likelyhood of Dolby Digital 5.1 becoming extinct.

With DTS becoming more popular, does anyone think that DD5.1 will become obsolete and DVD`s will be released without a DD5.1 soundtracks?

RE: technics sl-dv250 stereo dvd player hacks needed please

I have tried techtronics (www.techtronics.com) and they say that it can`t be made into multi-region. I hope that you have more luck.

I am not sure whether this is the best place to start asking questions, but I am having a lot of dificulty finding information on the Technics SC-DV250.

If you could give me some of your comments about the system then I would be MORE than grateful (sound quality, controls, annoying features, etc).
By the way, does the system play DTS DVD`s or does it only play DD 5.1 DVD`s?

Many thanks
Mark
