Warning about ViewDVD

I know I haven`t posted here for a while, but I thought this was important.

Have you seen the ads for http://www.viewdvd.co.uk yet?

You may have noticed that what they`re offering is remarkably similar to what http://www.in-movies.com are offering, but cheaper and bigger choice.

However, don`t forget the minor details. They clearly don`t do their own hosting, unlike In-movies.com. http://www.galonja.co.uk and http://www.viewdvd.co.uk both seem to resolve to the same IP address, http://217.69.35.176 - now how on earth can you access your account and see what DVD`s are on rental if they don`t even host their own website? On the other hand, http://www.in-movies.com and http://212.134.217.194 will both get you to the same self-hosted website for In-Movies.com

Oh, also ViewDVD don`t have a phone number. Or an address. Not even a po box number. Their FAQ and T&C`s are remarkably similar to In-Movies, but with one exception .... In-Movies no longer enforce a three month minimum term.

So, draw your own conclusions. Personally, I`ll be sticking with In-Movies.

So far I`ve hired one DVD from them, and it was fine. I`ve also hired one from Movietrak (erm, it was actually the same film) and that was faulty (which is why I hired it from DVDoptions in the first place). Since then, I`ve signed up with in-movies.com.

Big snag with in-movies.com is no subscription rebate when you get a faulty DVD, you just return it and they send out another, and that takes time for the postage. Movietrak refunded my rental when I complained. If I ever wanted to rent a more up-to-date film that in-movies don`t have, though, or be guaranteed of having a certain film on a certain date, I`d probably use DVDoptions again.

Post speeding up again. Two working days for last replacement. That`s good ... let`s see if they can keep it up.

Ok .... erm, it doesn`t actually exist yet. Some of you may be familiar with In-Movies where you can rent as many films as you want for £15 per month, up to a limit of three out at any one time. I asked them, and they tell me that in the next few weeks, they`ll allow you to upgrade to having five at a time for £20 per month. I`ve had good experience of In-Movies, so I reckon I`m very likely to go for this.

Well, I don`t have a default home page set in my browser, don`t like wasting bandwidth, you see, only have a dial-up connection. So it really depends what sort of mood I`m in.

But most frequently visited forums at the moment would probably be Net4nowt http://www.net4nowt.com then The Scream http://www.the-scream.co.uk then CAL TV Licencing http://www.spiderbomb.com/tv then this one! Then DigitalSpy cable TV news .... http://www.digitalspy.co.uk - no other forums that I frequently use at the moment.

Am a customer of In-Movies, so yes, I`m afraid I waste a lot of time rearranging my DVD list. In-Movies do have a forum as well, but I think it`s absolutely pants. They`re good for movie news though.

Favourite sources of streaming music has to be http://www.raveworld.net ... and there are also two or three non-ratio FTP sites I`ve found which are pretty kewl for MP3`s and MPEGs, but which I`m not going to give the URL`s of here.

RE: cheapest DVD rentals

My local library lets you have a DVD for a whole week for just £2.50, although their range isn`t nearly as good as DVDoptions. DVDoptions let you renew a film for a second week for just £2, so that`s £4.99 for two weeks - one penny less than the local library!

I`m a customer of In-Movies as well, although am slightly frustrated with the slow post. Of course, you still pay your subscription with In-Movies for time DVD`s spend in transit. It`s the cheapest way to rent a large number of DVD`s, though, but you might find that you still want to rent the odd one that you`re really keen on from DVDoptions or somewhere else as well, so that you`ll get it more quickly. (I`ve never used the In-Movies "most wanted" facility yet, because doing that means they only issue up to two DVD`s until the most wanted becomes available .... I`m not too keen on wasting a third of the subscription fee, and would rather rent particular favourites elsewhere.)

RE: any online DVD clubs apart from Britannia?

"The Music Store" and "Club Select" are trading names of Britannia. I understand that Britannia have specifically targeted former or current customers who moaned a lot with The Music Store, to get over the "I`ll never deal with Britannia again" problem, which is why you tend not to see a lot of ads for it in the press, although, of course, anyone can sign up (unlike Club Select and the bonus clubs, which are ONLY for selected previous Britannia customers).

Sconie ... I`d advise you to check .... I think you`ll find that Music Store is six items in a year and a half, rather than two years ... you have to fulfil your commitment slightly more quickly, although as you say, it can be a combination of CD`s VHS and DVD. However, recommended recordings happen less frequently with Music Store than the normal Britannia clubs (once every three months, rather than once a month).

Alternatively, if you live in the USA (or have an address in the USA that you can use), then what about Columbia House DVD? Not sure whether they undercut normal USA retailers though, but Columbia House DVD is only available to USA residents.

I`ve been a customer for just over a month, not bad so far, but the post seems to have slowed down a lot lately. However, they say that they`ve dumped freepost completely, and are now sending sae`s for returns to all their customers. I`ve yet to see an improvement in the times, though, however, apart from that, I`m happy, so I`m thinking of upgrading to more than three films at a time.
