RE: DVD player, 5.1 theatre sound and speakers can i do all this from scratch for under £600?

How about you give me £579, I go down to Lidl and get the TerraTec DVD HomeCinema 5.1 player for £179 and keep the £400 difference?

Call me a trogladyte, but I don`t see why it`s worth paying loads of cash for HiFi equipment that`s going to be half the price next year.
If you buy something like the above, it`s got a 3 year guarantee aparently, then you can buy something else equally state-of-the-art in 3 years time instead of shelling-out 600 notes now and probably the thing breaks one month after the 12 month warranty (like my Sony) and you have to buy another...

RE: Are the people writing in this forum using computer based DVD or player based?

I`m just looking into buying a home cinema setup myself , and am also pondering whether to go for a computer-based setup or not.

I would say it`s going to cost you at least as much for a PC setup as follows:

DVD player £60 (eg Pioneer, maybe £15 cheaper for cheaper brands)
remote control £20
5.1 speakers £70
===
£150

Thats assuming you`ve already bought the PC and doesn`t include the price of a decent sound card. If you allow £30 more for the sound card, then for the same price you can buy a complete home cinema system
(eg TerraTec DVD HomeCinema 5.1 - see "DVD Home Cinema complete. £179-00..Lidl Supermarkets" also in this forum).
I`m off to buy the Terratec tomorrow and I`ll be posting my opinions soon.
