RE: NTSC / PAL conversion query
Yep. It`s your TV. You need to get to the controls that change stuff like vertical and horizontal hold. Many years ago there were controls for this actually on the tv. Assuming this isn`t the case with your TV - and assuming your TV is relatively new - then hopefully there should be hidden enginner screens you can get access to that will allow you to change the settings. Search around on the net or get in touch with the company who makes the TV and tell them the problem. Ask them how you get access to the codes. It`s all very well getting an engineer out to do it (assuming the TV is in warranty so you don`t have to pay) but then you`ll have to be exactly happy with how they leave it. It`s best to be able to do it yourself. If you`re connecting many different consoles to your TV via scart then not all of them are going to be alligned the same. Just find the codes - centre the picture and then squash it if need be - or whatever you have to do; and you`ll be fine. I had exactly the same problem with my new TV I just got. Friend found the codes just by searching on Google (he had the same sort of problems as me and had bought the same manufacturer`s TV!). Good luck!
RE: NTSC / PAL conversion query
are they cropped or are they actually going off the top and bottom of the screen? I had a prob with all my 60hz consoles doing this on a new panasonic I got recently but a friend found the engineer codes off the net to change the display and then it was solved.

RE: pioneer dv646a static pop problem
Well if it`s the case that I`m only going to resolve the problem by connecting it with an optical cable them I`m pretty knackered as for the time being it`s only going to be connected via scart to my widescreen panasonic TV. I really hope that this isn`t the only way around the problem - but thanks for the info nevertheless.
And Neil - I got my machine from Spatial Audio in Tottenham Court Road in London. The guy who runs it, Craig, has been there for about 20 years. I know cos I bought stuff from him about 20 years ago! He also owns Brian`s Hifi just down the road from it. He`s an honest guy and he won`t bullshit you. He`s got me a replacement machine waiting for me to pick up but I`m really concerned even with a replacment the problem will still remain. Just now I tried it out again. Played the Terminator. Popped for the first few minutes. Turned it off and on again and has been fine since. I know it`ll go back to it though. This is just plain weird!

RE: pioneer dv646a static pop problem
Neil,
Sure I`ll let you know. No it only has one RGB socket. And yeah I`m more than happy with the picture and the sound. I spent ages looking into getting a player (as I`m sure most people do before deciding on their first machine) before deciding on the Pioneer. With the popping thing I"ve not had chance to fully appreciate the sound - but from what I heard so far it sounded pretty fine to me! And I`m totally blown away by the picture. The street scenes in Ghostbusters looked so sharp and clear that they looked like they were from a videogame! In fact my Dreamcast didn`t like quite so good as I thought after that! I`m sure you`ll be very happy with it. I just have to sort out this damn popping problem. I`ll post as soon as I have any news. Likewise let me know how you get on.
Cheers,
Dave
pioneer dv646a static pop problem
Hi everyone,
Just got a Pioneer dvd646a - uk model reprogrammed to multi-region. Got it home and put in a couple of R1 discs to make sure it played them and everything was fine. It`s connected to WS Panasonic TV with surround sound via cinema quest RGB scart lead. Settled down to watch the Terminator (R1) and heard a lot of static pops coming from main two tv speakers. Put in another disc (Ghostbusters R1) and it also did it - although neither did when I first tried them. Pushed on the scart connecters just in case and tried again. Ghostbusters seemed fine but then Terminator still did it. Left it a while and then Terminator stopped doing it! After a little while longer it started again and scart lead still appeared to be in place which led me to believe it wasn`t down to that. Now I`m totally stumped! Does anyone know what`s going on with this? I`ve had no problem with watching the TV or with other devices connected via the same scart socket...
Thanks,
Dave
RE: 50hz or 100hz any difference?
This was something I looked into recently. Went to John Lewis in Oxford street and compared two panasonic 28" widescreens - a 50hz and 100hz. In my opinion the 50hz looked more natural (maybe cos I"m used to it). The 100hz had a more solid appearence but to me people looked like they had a layer of plasticine around their skin. It looked strange and I didn`t like it. My girlfriend also agreed that the 50hz pic looked better. A friend of mine bought a 100hz panasonic cos he really notices flicker - if you do to then that might be something to keep in mind. Also 100hz screens can apparently break up with fast moving images like sports events. Guy at John Lewis confirmed this and in his opinion he felt 100hz screens were overrated. I bought a 50hz panasonic WS in the end and I think the picture is fantastic. There was a round up of tvs in the recent what hifi mag and panasonic came out very well. Maybe give Panasonic a call for a brochure or check the web. If you go to techtronics.com they have a lot of info. But I`ve heard conflicting things about them so be careful. Also might be an idea to do what I did and go to a store and look at both screens. BTW I bought from John Lewis cos of their excellent back up service. I`m sure you could find the TVs a lot cheaper around the web but you get a five year warranty with their JL tvs and they come out to your house if need be. In the past they`ve been amazing with their backup service. And no I don`t work there. ;) Oh and I wouldn`t touch anything by Sony with a barge pole. Hope this helps.
