Been reading up on that and I think will plonk for it once it is released. Looks pretty good and does everything it says on the tin.

Trouble though is the DVD portion - Panasonic Singapore (where I am) say they have no intention of releasing this model anytime soon, so will end up buying from the US.

You know whether the DVD part is region coded or not?

Right - dumb question but what advantages do I gain out of using the pwnage tool? I am on 2.1/3g. Pretty happy with the stuff on it, but would like more - who doesnt - and free - who doesnt :P

Apart from the apps, do I get any other advantages? I am not exactly very good with computers - barely managed to reflash my Nokia time and again, so if this needs techie skills of the unearthly kind, please do mention.

Blu-Ray with onboard TrueHD Audio Decoder

Looking to buy a blu ray player - or at least starting thinking abt it. Some requirements:

1. Need it to do 576i over HDMI for DVDs
2. Region free for DVDs if possible
3. On board TrueHD decoder - which should be able to feed into my amp via coaxial/toslink (no HDMI on the amp)

Good pic quality, cheap etc. etc. the works. Any suggestions?

Shih-tzu`s are a great and hardy breed but you need to be very very careful of it`s diet. They tend to gain weight - given most of them are apartment dogs, and it is difficult to lose. This can cause all sorts of problems in old age especially related to knees. The number of overweight shih-tzus I have seen is not funny.

I have a lowchen - similar size, but the biggest difference is they don`t shed. Have had her for a year but not a single hair shed on our clothes ever. Called sasha. Would strongly recommend this breed to anyone thinking of a small dog.

Miles - the onkyo looks pretty slick and at that price is a steal. The Yamaha setup is pretty good too!!!

I am currently using a Yamaha amp, B&W speakers and an REL Storm 5 sub. Works nicely for me.

Depends on the amount of $$$ you want to shell out. Samsung and Yamaha do some decent HTIBs(home theatre in a box) setups which can usually be had pretty cheaply. But I would recommend if you are spending the money to go the extra mile to get a decent 5 speaker setup, a sub and an amp.

Chris - absolutely understand where ur coming from which is why I am interested in the new Sony 550 which is coming out soonish (or so I have heard).

I live in Singapore so the region coding on the blu-ray is not an issue as Singapore is Region A like the US. What worries me is the stacks of Region 1/2/3/4 DVDs which I have... hopefully there is a hack to make the sony DVD player part multi region.

Doc - money`s not an issue. I would much rather get something for the long haul. I have no intention right now, but 2-3 years down the line I will in all likelihood be looking to upgrade to a 7.1 with DTS HD capability...

Think biggest diffy is the ASR - Auto Screen Rotate enabled in the 8GB with the new firmware update. The normal one cant do it at all - I have one, and am cursing this fact.

any advice? Good old PS3 or something better? Current system can handle only DTS 5.1 through an analog output. TV can handle anything via HDMI.

I dont believe they will completely quit.

Feel they will launch the super-black Kuro nex gen range as an ultra premium segment - the ferrari of plasmas if you please, meaning a 50" will set you back 6grand or so.

But a really sad thing... the kuro is truly awesome.

RE: Petrol Management?

The highest possible gear misconception has been around since cars with carburettors - when it WAS true.

As said earlier - a lower engine size will not necessarily mean better fuel economy.

Here`s some tips:

1. Keep your engine clean. Most of us tend to use the bog standard fuel, but once a month tankful of Shell V-Power actually helps clean the engine - there are additional surfactants and detergents added.

2. Keep your revs between 2000-3000, whatever gear you might be in. This will mean you might need to change gears much more, but it will definitely help.

3. Rapid accelaration is the biggest killer. Learn to keep a light right foot. Anticipate braking and accelaration as much as possible.

4. Keep tyre pressures as recommended. Slight drops cause higher fuel consumption.

5. The first gear is just for moving off - shift to 2nd ASAP.

Regardless of which one you go for, you won`t get a great picture feeding it a SKY+ signal.
This is because you can only connect SKY+ via scart.
Scart = analogue = crap.
If you`re spending that much money on a big LCD/Plasma, you really need to buy a SKY HD box.
You needn`t go for the HD subscription though, if you don`t want to.
The HD box alone, even without the HD subscription, will give you a better picture.
This is because you will be able to connect via HDMI, which is digital.
So ALL your channels look better.
You also get double the recording capacity with a SKY HD box.

Not entirely correct: BOTH HD Ready and Full HD TVs will ACCEPT a 1080p signal (of course there are some which dont, but in general most do) via HDMI. HOWEVER, only a FULL HD Screen will show the full 1920x1080 signal. HD Ready screens will simply downscale it and show 1365x768 (or lower sometimes).

Also - Disagree: while it is true that to take full advantage of Sky`s capabilities, you need to buy a Sky HD Box, a good SCART Lead fed into a halfway decent TV will show you a nice picture. In fact more than half the SD channels through a Sky HD box worse than through a Sky+ box. In most pro installations, a dual connection is used - analogue SCART to watch SD and HDMI to watch the HD Stuff (or so I have seen).

The oppo is definitely a good bet, but the Sammy is a damn damn good upscaling DVD Player. Highly recommended - used to own one till recently (upgraded to BD).
