RE: Help! - I think my Sky digibox is bust
One thing more to try. Unplug the box from the mains. Wait approx 45 seconds. Press and keep your finger on the "Back up" button on the machines facia. Plug the machine in and a few lights will (should) flick on and off. The machine should go into a software download by force. (If the machine is locked, this may be the job) Make sure it`s connected to a phone line.
RE: Installing a dimmer switch
Quite straight forward here. As there are two types of light switch/ dimmer available--plastic and matal framed, the plastic one directly replaces the existing toggle switch and needs no earthing. The metal (brass effect) dimmer or switch does need earthing as it constitutes a hazard in the event of an overload.
Therefore, go ahead and fit the plastic one but ensure to kill the power before fixing.
By the way, if you are fitting to regular light bulbs, ensure that the load does not exceed 400 wats or you`ll need a high load dimmer (more expensive) and if you are using to dim halogen spots, look for a dimmer that can be used with these type of bulbs.
Good luck!!
RE: Has anyone bought a "JVC DRM1" Dvd Recorder???????????????
Pity I didn`t see this site before now as I too would have been more than interested in the other reviews. Living in Dublin, dvd recorders have been a bit on the rare side and apart from online shops, were difficult to find. I`ve been in the market for a recorder for a while now and initially saw the new Sony machine with the dv input. This machine was retailing for 1299 euros so next time you think you have it bad, remember us poor gang in Ireland. I had decided to run with the Philips DVD 75 and was en-route to do the deal when at the last minute, I passed by a specialist shop and what had just arrived that day but the JVC DR-M1. Although they didn`t know too much about it as in fairness, the shop staff hadn`t had any time to play, the spec seemed to do all the talking. I needed front dv socket, r and rw recording, the ram feature was a big yes for my wife. The deal was done there and then and off I went with the new toy. One thing to point out to you UK guys is that you have it made with your online shops. In Dublin, our tv signal comes from VHF as Dublin is on a cable platform. If we in the south of Ireland buy tv`s or vcr`s etc from the UK, we also need a televertor to convert the vhf signal to uhf. That is a big hindrance in buying this type of hardware from the net so when I tell you that the price of the DR-M1 was 699 euros ( 480 stg approx), you know how good you have i!
Anyway, the machine is a corker. I do browse the usual what dvd/ what home entertainment mags looking for good reviews for potential buys but I could find nowt for this purchase. On setting up the machine within my toy collection, I must say that it is possibly the first machine that required reference to the instruction manual for me. I found the connectivity quite good and have it rigged to a vcr, 32 inch Pani, sky box, Sony DD amp and a Sony lcd projector with great results. Ok, the rear of the setup is like something from Cape Canavril but what the heck. If you`re not in the know, you have to read up on differences of r and rw discs, type 1 discs and so on. You also have to get used to the fact that by using a dvd-rw disc, you cannot simply keep on recording over and over again like we do with video tape. When you record on dvd-rw, the recording must be erased firstly before recording again..that is off course if there is not enough space left on the disc.
Off air recording from cable is good. From Sky box it`s excellent, from another dvd source using a filter, it`s a 10. In my set up, I relay all the signals around the house to other tvs so video, terestrial, satelite are piped. The DR-M1 does not output its signal through the rf so if you want to include this signal, you`ve gotta` loop this through your vcr using the av cables but it does work!.
Playback of pre recorded discs is excellent. You either like the blue led light on the front of the machine or you don`t!
To record onto a blank disc, you need to tell the machine what speed/bitrate you wish to use (similar to sp/lp selection). Hit the record and off she blows. WHen recording is finished,a "please wait" message is displayed on screen. If you wish to finalise the disc so that other machines can read the data, you must use the finalise function in the utility screen. That`s easy enough. You must keep in mind that if you make a c**k up recording onto an R disc, tough as you can`t deleter the data and you only have what space remaining on the disc to record on so be carefull!! The rw discs are more user friendly if mistakes are made but of course are more expensive. Cheepest disc I`ve found in high street stores are Mitsubishi 4.7 g dvd-r`s which have a 90% success rate and the kind sirs do replace them if they are faulty. One glitch that I`ve encountered is that from time to time, the machine just stops and refuses to do anything. This is similar to an application on a pc but at least on a pc, you have the task manager function to shut down the offending bug. This has happened about 5 times on my machine since late October and the only way to get the machine back is to pull the plug and give it 30 sec to get it`s breath back. Yes the fan can be annoying but if you have your machines within a cabinet, you don`t hear it too much but you`re aware that it`s there.
Expect to keep the manual nearby for the first few weeks to refer to. It certainly is a buzz to be able to record onto dvd for home use. When you do so, you will never go back to tape again. One or two little niggly things to keep in mind are as follows. If you record a programme, you CAN enter markings for chapter advance etc but when you finalise the disc, these markings are delted and the machine puts its own markings approx 5 mins aprat, onto the disc. The markings may not have any realtion to your film/ programme. If you are recording an original title, you can of course use the pause.stop button which WILL add a marker which will be also kept when you have finalised the disc.
Expect the machine to take 30 secs on loading each disc. This is normal as the machine is a multi disc reader but if theres a programme which comes on the box and you are scurrying to find a disc, it can seem like forever before the unit is ready for recording.
It`s my first dvd recorder and I`d give it 9 and a half out of ten and by the way, my two free Lord of the Ring dvd`s just arrived today.
