HELP: Problem with split screen image when playing back DVDs on Toshiba SD330

:/ I recently purchased a multi region Toshiba SD 330 dvd player from Richer sounds after reading numerous good reviews about it.I have been extremley happy with it until very recently when i tried to play a disc which was a vcd quality film burnt to a dvd. it does play on the player but is split into 2 the only way to watch the film is to zoom right in to it and shuffle it to the right of the screen. I thought this might just be a one off so have tried some more discs of the same format, unfortanatley the same problem occurs.
I have tried the discs on my sony 525 and they play absolutley fine, i have also tried it on all my friends players and they all work fine apart from a friend who has a Toshiba dvd player. Is this a known problem with Toshiba players and if so does any one know if there is a way round it apart from having to zoom in. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
