I`ve a TX28DTX1(the predecessor to DTM1 series) and yes it has both analogue and digital tuners, you can choose which signal you want to output from the scart and just program the Tv if you intend to record a digital channel whilst you are not watching the tv. Can`t fault the TV personally

are you setting the recorder to the corresponding AV channel that the scart is attached to? And are you checking that if the Sky box is outputting RGB or Composite that the recorder is also expecting that signal

I was reading on another forum where someone was aksing how youa ctually finalize a disc on one of these machines, they could find no mention of it in the manual apparently.

I guess this could well explain why the machine is £99 and sold in Argos.....

When you switch to Aux on the DVD player and get the Sky sound and the dvd logo, you now need to just get your TV to display the Sky picture. If as from your earlier description your Sky box is connnected to the TV via the VCR on both Scart 2 and RF, so you either need to select(using the TV remote ONLY) either the other AV channel(ie. the TV/AV button or sometimes the `Red` fastext button) or you need to select the RF channel you have tuned in to receive the signal from your VCR and ensure your VCR is outputting the signal from your Sky box.

If it`s one of the Lenoxx HT*00`s you should be able to select AUX when you switch on the DVD so that the picture is then disabled and it just uses the DVD as the amp rather than as a home cineman system. the phono outputs on your sky box or tv should go to AUX in on the Lenoxx

How would you connect IDTV/Sky/DVD-R

Considering buying a new TV and for prices that are out there some of the IDTV`s are comparing quite favourably(also in case I ever do finish with Sky)
Plus it also means that I can record from the IDTV signal and still watch Sky if I ever need to(rather than having to record from standard analogue signal if I want to watch a Sky channel as I do now)

Problem is though to do with the last bit, currently I have Sky->E55->TV, the TV/E55 also have an RF connection so if need be I can record analogue channel on E55 and watch Sky on the TV via RF channel instead. If I was to get an IDTV how would they all connect up, I can`t work out how if the setup is still Sky->E55->TV how I would be able to say record an IDTV channel on the E55 yet watch Sky on the TV? Or is the only solution a 3 scart IDTV with the Sky video scart connected to a spare on the TV?

No offence but you are actually considering `spending` c.£230 on an item and one of your main consideration poinst is you have about £4 worth of DVD+R`s you`d like to use? You`ll be back here asking the same questions in 11 months at this rate

I`m sure in the manual it specifies under what discs can and can`t be played that jpeg photo discs can`t be played. Can`t get on to panny site to confirm that though

My recommendation would be to go for a recorder which does both + and - and then you can determine for yourself which will play in your player. I would recommend the Sony RDR-GX300 which does DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW.

For me DVD-R works in a recent dvd player, but not an older dvd player or portable dvd player; DVD+R works in all of my dvd players - so I stick with the +R / +RW format as it works best for me.


So someone who has asked for an opinion on a HD based Panasonic(fairly well regarding as probably being one of the top ) DVD recorder makes) and you`ve suggested that because they also provide DVD-RAM compatibility on the model it may not be a wise choice and suggest a non HD model because it offers DVD+R/RW?

To the original poster, assuming you are getting it for a decent price i.e. sub £300 it`s probably a good choice for whats out there, you may want to look at the topic about the new Panasonic models as they have +R/RW so no doubt will be much better :/

Isn`t the E85 HDD so editing on discs is a not really a valid point?

Also your claims about compatibility are going to cause a stir(especially since - standard preceeded + standard didn`t it so generally - is more backward compatible)

out of curiousity why do you need to format a RAM disc? on my E55 from memory I`ve never used the format option, what does it do(apart from the obvious that it wipes data, does formatting provide any function than just putting a RAM disc in and recording away?)

It`s not killing it off completely but the software update allegedly contains a new setting that you can set the dot to turn off after `x` seconds

Depending on what you are buying we can probably come up with a full list showing that each place is cheaper on certain things but more expensive on others. A few weeks back I did some comparisons on various sites(all for the same disc some datawrite titaniums), for smaller orders i.e. 25/50 disks a place called diskdepot came out cheapest even for next day stuff, UKDVDR was second, as you order more i.e. 100 disks then SVP became cheapest, diskdepot again not far behind.

As with all things it all depends on what you want at that particular time, each of the retailers has various offers which will make them cheapest, this site is quite useful to get an overall idea of how much each place is at it gives prices including postage

the £14.99 PAnny RAM discs are non-caddy(think they are that price at Argos), I got a set of them for any recordings I want to transfer to my PC and then onto DVD-R to save. Otherwise I bought a double sided datasafe caddy from Big Pockets for day to day stuff which was about £3.50. Works fine everytime and is good to just eject and flip over if haven`t had chance to watch whats on the side at that point

is it not Sky TV scart to DVD player in, DVD player out to E55 in, E55 out to TV with a seperate scart directly from Sky to TV, normally the SKy signal would loop through the DVD player and E55, if you choose to play a DVD that should override and be input to the E55 when you would then switch the TV to watch Sky via the other scart, guess the Sonel scart would be between DVD player and E55

(on paper it looks right, in practice it may not be!)

4) a PC with a DVD drive that reads RAM is fine to do that
