You need to to have the disc tray open then press 77 and then enter on the remote this sends you to a menu, select country code and change it to 13.

press enter repeatedly to cycle to region 9
close the tray
turn the player off
turn it back on

had the same problem with my goodmans player ,all i did is change the video output from pal to ntsc and problem solved.(hopes this helps)

Press pause
Type 314159 wait for menu to apper
Press 0
press pause
Turn off for 10 sec then back on

Region code hack posted by Joe Moe, April 30 2004:
The hack published by Mats-Åke Larsson works perfectly on my DVP642. I`m copying it here for your viewing pleasure:

1. Turn on the player.
2. Open the tray.
3. Press the following sequence on the remote:
7 8 9 OK 0
4. The number 0 will appear on the lower left side of your screen.
5. Your player is now region free! Put in a DVD and enjoy! :)

NOTE: The 0 in the sequence above represents the region code. 0 = region free. If you want to change your player to just a specific region code, replace the 0 with the region number you want.

The hack should be perfectly safe, but USE IT ON YOUR OWN RISK!

The product is region free.

try this hack it worked for me

* Switch on the DVD player - you don`t need to open the drawer.
* Press 1, 6, 7, 1 and 9 one by one on the remote.
* A hidden configuration menu comes up. Press OK on the remote, then 0 to change the configuration number to 0.
* You should now see that the region is set to ALL.
* Press EXIT on the remote.

Slight downside with the player, although it converts NTSC to PAL, quality is not very good (player pauses every 3~4 seconds). If player output set as NTSC, no problem.
Conclusions: If your TV cannot handle NTSC, you won`t be able to watch region 1 DVDs, if it is, this is a bargain DVD player.
