The reason you could return your phones so easily is that small goods like that are supported on comets system by a 12 month manufacturers exchange warranty, so no cost is incurred by comet in exchanging these goods for you. they are returned to the manufacturer and comet are reimbursed.
with the larger brown or white goods there is no such facility. The manufacturer provides their one year warranty to repair (and sometimes replace a faulty item) comet doing all the legwork for you of arranging the engineer, or sending one from their own service centre if they have such an arrangement with the manufacturer(the manufacturer pays comet to do this on their behalf)
Anything comet do outside this comes out of their own pocket. If they write a product off, they recondition it and sell it instore clearence or online clearance. The store that handles the refund takes the blow of any loss made which is why they are so reluctant to do this.
Comet will make you jump trough hoops to get your faulty prodcut attended to but just remember that you are entitled to a product that does what it says it does for a reasonable time, dont be fobbed off, they have the mechanisms in store to deal with any refund/exchange, be persistent (although its not woth hassling the flor staff they cant do anyhting, you have to target a amnager who can authorise stuff)

Its entirely up to the manager whether you get the voucher or the money.
when they process the refund they actually resell you the vouchers thus not affecting the stores P&L that day , they refund the purchase price and resell that in vouchers - check your recpiets its quite clear what they do. If you ordered online its exactly the same, they can process the refund from any stor/comet website on their system.
So its up to you how much fuss you actually cause to get your cash back.

Having tried them 3 times and recieved the wrong item each time, and upon recieving the correct item then being charged for the item i returned /refused as well as the correct one i can well and truely say i have learnt my lesson !
