RE: Dell Inspiron Laptop
Hi all,
this looks like a great offer. I`m just worried about the graphics capability of the laptop. Is it good enough to watch DVD`s / XVids? How about running something like Windowblinds?
To those who have already bought one, any surprises?

Another problem I`ve found with the player - it doesn`t read multisession dvd`s, which is a big let down.
Basically you have to make the whole (divx) dvd at once. You can`t for example record an episode then watch it, then record another episode onto the same disc.
Bummer!

Sorry yes I meant decoder built-in, not an amp.
For multiregion hack do the following:
1. Dowload the file "kpjc19_1.dvd" from: people.freenet.de/Targa/frieschalten_des_regionalcodes.htm
2. Create a folder called "RMTM0000" - those are 4 zero`s by the way.
3. Inside that folder create another folder called "SCARLET"
4. Now place the downloaded file kpjc19_1.dvd inside the folder SCARLET, so you end up with the following directory structure: RMTM0000/SCARLET/kpjc19_1.dvd
5. Now fire up your favourite cd burning program (nero has a fully functional 30 day trial - http://www.nero.com/nero7/eng/nero7-demo.php) and copy the RMTM0000 folder to the root of your new cd.
6. Place the cd in your dvd player and voila a blue screen (rather reminiscent of a commodore 64) should come up telling you that you have a region 2 player and asking for you to input the new region. Press 0 for region 0 (which means region free). Press pause to exit and you are done!
Now whenver you insert a foreign dvd you should no longer see the region protection screen and it should play instead.

RE: Bargain DivX & Card Reader DVD Player £19.99 From Lidl!!
When you do the firmware upgrade you have to do a factory reset which nullifies the multi-region hack, so you will have to do the multi-region hack again. But it works fine.
You don`t need an amp - this baby has one built in - so you just have to plug in the relevant number of speakers (of course you can also just throughput to an amp).
Yes - the upgrade makes a *huge* difference to divx/xvid playback. Think of all those poor punters out there who don`t know that this unit is upgradable. In any case on the targa site they don`t even mention divx playability as a reason to upgrade.
So that leaves one final question - how to fix the zoom feature for DVD`s on a 4:3 screen? A 4x zoom is useless. If only the zoom could be fixed this unit would be nigh on perfect. Any ideas?
P.S. if you want a "test" cd, this one from divxtest.com is pretty good: www.divxtest.com/article.php3?id_article=124
I downloaded it via FTP and it maxed out my 8meg connection.

Picked up one of these babies yesterday. Updated firmware + changed region code to 0. Playback is pretty darn good. Well pleased. :D
Only 1 problem - for a 4:3 tv the zoom feature is useless for widescreen DVD`s. Unzoomed you get a narrow box which fills less than half the screen area, and zoomed (x4) you get a huge middle section which takes up the entire screen lobbing off a lot of the side action. The only other zoom is x16 - aaaaaarrrghhhhh!
Is there any way to get a decent (in-between) zoom on this box? Anyway to get the manufacturer to release an updated firmware with a decent zoom function?
