RE: What`s the drawback of having only one scart socket?

Are we talking DVD here?

The main drawback I would think is down to the shortsighted TV manufacturers who only see fit to provide one RGB enabled scart.

A second scart socket on the DVD player should enable daisy chaining of RGB signals, eg pass your game console through the DVD player and into the TV.

As for recording from DVDs to videos – well who says you need scart for this? Assuming that macrovision is not an issue, then if you have an SVHS or DVHS deck, then you’d be mad to use the composite output via scart and would be better advised using the S video output from the s socket. Alternatively, many players have a composite phono output so you could easily get a lead to connect that to your VCR.

TV connectivity is a real issue however and its pretty poor even on supposed high level TVs. I have a Tosh widescreen RPTV and it has 3 scarts (one RGB capable) and a set of component inputs. Into this I use a Quattro scart switching box - which takes feeds from my 2 DTT digiboxes, my dreamcast, composite from the DVD, and S video from the amp (for whenever I need to check the onscreen set up menus).

I run the DVD and PS2 component out into my amp and then run component out to the TV and into the other scarts I run S video from my two DVHS decks.

Add two active scart buffers and RGB to S Video connectors and you have an absolute mass of cabling/switching boxes etc. Much of which could be eliminated by the provision of up to 6 video inputs and more intelligent video outputs of equipment. It’s beyond me why digiboxes don’t offer S video out via the second scart as well as composite.

RE: 2 QUESTIONS...

Isnt the current Fugitive disc pan and scan??

if so then theres the answer to your question

RE: How Many DVD`s Have YOU got???

Not an old man (only 30!) but am not willing to put up with bad behaviour that was spoiling the film not only for me but also for lots of young children who were in the audience - swearing loudly, throwing things at each other etc is not behaviour I`m prepared to tolerate.

Unfortunately its all too common these days in the cinema. When I was in the States this summer some bloke next to me made two phone calls during an Imax film at the Smithsonian - could believe this! The scene in Scary Movie is not an exaggeration I`m afraid.

And as for missing trailers - well big deal, I put my light sabre away after Return of the Jedi and have no interest whatsoever in the new films

RE: How Many DVD`s Have YOU got???

Re going to the cinema - essentially yes, I will wait for dvds rather than go to the cinema

I`ve got a reasonable home system - denon 3802 amp and tosh 56 inch widescreen set, and I`m very happy watching DVDs.

I did go to see Harry Potter but was disgusted with some of the audience, so much so that I complained and had a bunch of teenagers thrown out as they were spoiling the film.

But all this confirmed to me that going to the cinema is not the way to enjoy a film these days.

And as for "even Lord of the Rings" - well some of us really couldnt care less about this film - I tried to re read the book over the summer and had forgotten how turgid and plodding it was - got to the end of the Two Towers and gave up.

RE: How Many DVD`s Have YOU got???

One of the many good things about my wife is that she is as much a fan of home cinema as I am, hence we have a 56 inch tv and 16 speakers in our front room!

RE: Oh My God MY Eye`s. Withnail and I region 2, Anyone else with problems.

DEFT is Digital Electronic Film Transfer and is a cleaner way of converting from NTSC to PAL. I`m no expert but I believe it eliminates the 3:2 pull down thus reducing motion judder.

Criterion released Withnail in August this year - non anamorphic, but IIRC not in 5.1 and not with a commentary.

The R2 master was prepared from the same transfer as the R1 but standards converted rather than a straight to PAL or PAL downconversion from Hidef.

Essentially in picture terms, the R2 loses twice - first by not having a direct to PAL telecine and secondly by the standards conversion being non DEFT.

Hope that makes it clearer!

RE: Oh My God MY Eye`s. Withnail and I region 2, Anyone else with problems.

Probably down to it being a non DEFT conversion from NTSC to PAL.

I`ve bought the Criterion disc for watching, and the R2 for the commentary.

Yes - it is one of my all time favourite films!

RE: How Many DVD`s Have YOU got???

Bought my first player in Oct 97 - collection currently about 850 discs, although have bought well over 1200.

Why is it so big - well theres lots of films I feel I "ought" to see, so have splashed out on these, plus I dont bother with the cinema any more.

Also I`m a big fan of cult tv, so have getting on for 300 discs of TV material
