I think Alan is pulling your leg. As far as I know, the only known hack is for the Japanese version with the v1.00 DVD drivers. Pushing up on the pad of a digital control plugged into port one will allow you to basically play any region disc.
However, rumor has it that many of the modchips still in development will also provide "regionless" DVD functionality.
