Blank screen problem with Philips 711....Help!

I have recently bought my first DVD player A Philips 711 and am generally very pleased with it. However I have encountered a couple of problems. The first is that I could not get my video to work with the DVD player plugged in. I have tried connecting the Video (using SCART) into the DVD and then connecting this to the first of the SCART inputs on my TV. At first the DVD worked fine but the video would only play via the co-ax. Then things got worse, Now with the DVD connected the TV screen goes black with a faint outline of the picture, (when the DVD is on stand by) but it will still play the DVD`s no problem.
I then connected the Video to SCART 1 on the TV and DVD to SCART 2, but then the DVD picture is poor as there is interference from the TV picture. So at the moment I have the video permanently connected and the DVD only connected when needed.
The TV is a 6 year old Panasonic 4:3 Not sure on the model number and the Video is same age Panasonic also unsure of model number. (I should be getting widescreen soon if the wife allows me!!!)
Is this a problem with the DVD player?
