RE: WHAT IS THE BEST 007 DVD?
The Live and Let Die documentary with the out-takes of the stunt guy in the crocodile scene is brilliant, but overall in terms of value for money with its range of extras Id say The Living Daylights. Also can anyone tell me why we never had the same high standard Patrick McNee narrated `making of` documentaries on TND and Goldeneye? It would have been interesting to have heard the reasons as to why there was a 6 year drought in production of Bond between Licence to Kill and Goldeneye.
RE: Excuses given as to why Region 1 discs (usually) have more extras than Region 2 discs
I know Tom :) Leo and Kate certainly seemed to be doing some French in the back of that car anyway lol
RE: Stronger Region Coding ?
It wouldnt surprise me. Also I think that RCE has failed somewhat, especially when only Warner and Columbia are the only studios to take it up so far. I think they realise that another system is needed in the long term so that can extract even more money out of us poor souls.
RE: Whats the most you have paid or would pay for a Dvd
The only reason I`ve shopped at Virgin or HMV in the past is because of my 10% student discount cards. I will be shopping at Play247 now though or Amazon.com for the region ones that Play dont have.
I paid 19.99 for the region 2 Platoon in February, but Its getting flogged because the Reg 1 Platoon special edition is out in June with all the extras that our Region 2 shouldve had. Rip-off Britain strikes again!

RE: Trailers - dont they just piss you off!!!
I dont watch the trailers on the dvds i buy very often, and the ones I have seen are usually inferior picture quality to the movie on the disc anyway.
The worst one was the alleged `teaser trailer` for JP3 which they have on the JP1 and Lost World set. I mean what exactly was the point of that?? Oh sorry I know the answer actually, another marketing trick wasnt it ;-0)
RE: cracking third installments
The most dissapointing 3rd instalment for me was Godfather Part 3, after the first two films, (Godfather part 2 being my favourite sequel incidentally), Coppola seemed to lose his mind in the third one, especially the disastrous casting of his daughter.
RE: Back by popular demand - what players have you all got then ?
Panasonic RV 40 only thing was it wasnt hackable, but hey thats life. Nice looks and its been a good player.
RE: Where is the best place to get The Sopranos R1 Boxset?
Theres also www.amazon.com although I dont know how long they take to send stuff to the UK though because I havent ordered anything from them yet.
I am definitely getting the R1 set eventually as well, as you say the R2 set is severely lacking in the same amount and quality of extras. Nothing new there then!

RE: Are there any VCR`s which automatically disable macrovision?
Thanks Sammy, er no I definitely didnt read the retailers thread! This is very scary. I ordered the Panasonic RV40 kit from Techtronics and I considered sending my player down but instead I just got my local Panasonic dealer to fit the chip.
A doubt still remains however because I ordered a region 1 disc to play on it which I havent yet received, so Im on tenterhooks to see if it works now!
Ill give you an update on how things go.

RE: Greatest chase scenes in a movie?
RONIN definitely. John Frankenheimer was a great innovator of this type of car filming. Unfortunately MGM never seem to get round to releasing his first venture into this type of cinematography, i.e GRAND PRIX (1966). The motor racing sequences he did at Monaco and elsewhere are fantastic in that film.
RE: RIP OFFS!!!!!
Hmm sounds familiar Tom. Seven comes to mind, its already been released twice, the most recent one with a commentary, but of course no `making of` documentary as such which they will no doubt be saving for its third release sometime next year!
I havent bought the new release of A River Runs Through It either because I know there was a documentary for that which even was on the VHS but not the new DVD!
Apparently the new Bond movie production has been delayed, still, at least the Bond dvd collection I have at the moment hopefully wont be superceded by a new improved issue with `recently discovered missing footage` too soon!
Dont you find it strange how the studios keep unearthing new bits of film to market to the public or am I just too cynical? lol

RE: What TV series would you like to see released on DVD ?
OK I am a self-confessed Kung Fu fan so forgive me, but Id love to see Monkey on DVD and also The Water Margin. OK I know the dubbing wasnt great and the picture quality wasnt either but it was the late seventies !
RE: `Fancy` Cases
P.S. I am taking bets as to what horrors Paramount will do to the Godfather series. My hunch is that we will get a trailer if we are lucky! Also if Francis Coppola had time to narrate the `Kurtz Compound` sequence why not the whole of Apocalypse Now, and whatever happened to the Hearts of Darkness documentary for it that we saw on the VHS version?

RE: `Fancy` Cases
I know what you mean Tom. I bought the Warner issue of All The President`s Men today because it is one of those films I just have to have. Having said that as with all the Warners I own, I feel like I have to handle them like a rare Ming Dynasty Vase, because the least sudden movement and they get damaged lol. Of course Warners dont stop there. They have gone further with their Goodfellas release by making the damn thing a `flipper`.I also noticed that their UK version of Sopranos Series 1 has a 5 part documentary which are only 5 minutes long each. The US version in comparison has a 77 minute interview feature and a commentary on the first episode. Thank goodness I got my player modified to multi-region. If I have to buy a dvd with a cardboard case it has to be wrapped up because it doesnt take long for them to disintegrate on the shelf without it and thats before youve even bought it. One of these days us long suffering citizens of rip -off Britain will make a stand and tell the studios they can no longer get away with things like this!
RE: The Best Films that never got an Oscar! (And the winner is??)
When I think of the Oscars I automatically remember the films that were denied recognition rather than the films that actually won ! Its amazing how many times they pick the most banal films for the prize. I feel sorry for directors like Martin Scorsese for example, he must feel he cant win with the academy. It was bad enough that Raging Bull lost out to the very ordinary Ordinary People in 1980, but the ultimate sin was Goodfellas losing out to Dances With Wolves in 1990. Thats the trouble with Hollywood though, they tend to jump on a moral crusade every so often, and if they see a film that conveys a `message` as they see it, anything associated with it gets the accolade no matter how badly made it was. With Dances with Wolves it was the plight of the Native American Indians (very noble of course) but not followed through and soon forgotten because they soon find a new cause to replace it. Hopefully one day we will see a selection committee with real dedicated people interested in the craft of film making who can make a rational and objective choice.

RE: What is the best gun fight/shootout in a movie ever?
If you have your 5.1 sound on I find the last night time shoot out scene in Platoon pretty good with all that machine gun fire zapping through the jungle!
Excuses given as to why Region 1 discs (usually) have more extras than Region 2 discs
Now Im sure we have all heard various reasons for this, I just thought I would add the one I was given by my local Panasonic dealer. His view was that the Region 2 discs have less extras because extra space was required to accomodate all the different European languages on the subtitles. Hmm...... I think not somehow. Anyone been given similar reasons or some other schpeel?
