Alba DVD Player £39.99 @ Argos
Alba DVD only £39.99 in argos (the new cat). Available from saturday.
It is model Alba DVD 45XI (I think). But i couldnt find any info on it, so dont know if it can be multi region. But in the instructios, it did say is can Play CD-R/CD-RWs. Plus Kodak Pic disks, Mp3 cds.
Cat Number 533/4049
If anyone has any info on this, please post. I want to know if it is any good.... As some of the other Alba dvds are cheap and i have heard good things from them.
Hi,
if you have an Asda store near you then I would highly recommend the Pacific dvd player.
I do not know if Asda is aware but this little machine, retail £59.99 plays EVERYTHING!!!
without having to hack any regions or codes whatsoever!!!

I`d second Keldo`s post, but always being on the lookout for bargains, this Alba looks unbelievable value. Anybody care to take the plunge and see what it can do?

The Alba DVD45 is now £37.95, and all stores have large stocks (according to the TV ad - my local had 43 left at midday)
As for the Pacific DVD player at Asda, my uncle just picked one up for £44, so looks like they`ve been dropped in price again!

Bought one of these this morning.
Is a good little player! Sound is better than my Dansai dvd852. :) I tried rg2, rg1 and a DVD-r disc, and it played them all! Fantastic. :) Retired my Dansai to the bedroom, and keeping the Alba in living room. :D
the cyberhome ch dvd 400 is by far the best budget player!!!!!!!!!!!
plays everything i throw at it and the alba dvd45xi is the same as the dvd108!

does it play multi region disks?
Well, I decided to give the Alba cheapie a shot :)
The player I received was the DVD45xi, not the DVD45 shown in the catalogue. The 45xi is similar to the DVD108 in appearance, but lacks the front panel display.
Good points:
* It`s multi-region out of the box! It plays my R1s (including RCE titles) and R4s without a hint of complaint.
* It has RGB (via SCART) and composite output. It also supports true NTSC output from PAL DVDs, which might be a worthwhile feature for some people.
* Picture quality is OK (not as good as the old 114, though).
Bad points:
* The remote is horrible, even by Alba standards. The Skip, Search, Play and Stop buttons are tiny, rubber lentil-sized things, and they`re too close together.
* No VCD or SVCD playback.
* Not very DVD-R friendly. Half my DVD-Rs seem to work fine, the other half just hang on the "Loading..." screen. The 114, by contrast, will play them all.
* Very cheap and nasty looking (I suppose you`d expect that with a sub-£40 player).
* No 50Hz PAL output from NTSC DVDs - most cheapies will do this.
* No S-Video or optical output.
* No standby function - you have to use the mains power button to turn it on and off.
If you just want to play original DVDs, and aren`t too fussed about VCDs, DVD-Rs and what-not, the Alba might be up your street. Personally I`d spend a few extra pounds and get a genuine `plays everything` bargain.
Mine is going back to Argos on Monday...
