£188 Pace Twin HD Freeview recorder

nice1 (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 12th February 2004, 21:07

Seems like these are even cheaper now - well under £200 at £187.99 mail order from Digital Direct .
Highly recommended.

When you factor in their delivery charge (about £7) and the convenience, you may find it better to go to Argos at £199. At least if you have a problem (and they are troublesome) you can drop into your local store.

I got mine on Saturday and immediately downloaded the latest software - it keeps locking when you play back - usually when it gets to the end of the adverts during a recording the picture freezes with the last frame of the ad, but the sound carries on. It also locks when actually recording and then shows a 0 second recording.

A search on the net reveals lengthy threads about the problems - many are pinning their hopes o a new download in March - I`ll wait and see, if it doesn`t solve the problem then its going back to Argos (no 16 day retirn on freeview boxes but if its knackered that is irelevant)

Yea I`ve seen the Digital Spy threads but honestly never had any problems with mine since buying it last summer.

Granted, DD maybe cheap but you *try* contacting there so called CS when things go tits up its near impossible, they never answer the bloody phone and dont know how to use email. Those f***ers STILL have £108.50 for a digibox I never got! >:(

Goto Argos and spend the extra, you`ll be glad you did!

Does anyone know if it is compatible with Top Up TV?

Hi Robber,

I have an analogue NTL setup with just the basic 5 channels and my Freeview box cannot tune in anything at all - it just says "no signal", so if you are on an analogue NTL setup then I can guarantee that you will not be able to record anything at all.

I imagine you will also have problems with a digital NTL setup as the NTL box converts the digital information to an analogue signal for your TV and the Freeview tuner will think there is "no signal" - no digital signal.

I am not a huge expert in this area though, so I do not mind if one of you contradicts me on this.

Like one of the other authors above has written, Argos will *not* take back Freeview products under their 16 day warranty.

Hope that helps.

Andrew

I also bought a Pace twin from Argos last year (for £249!). Had lots of problems with it locking out, often half way through a recording - resulting in whole recording being lost- v. annoying. I contacted Pace who said they were aware of "some problems with lock ups" and "hoped" it would be fixed in a future upgrade. I decided to return my unit to Argos as faulty and got the cash back. My verdict is: good product but needs further mods, also HD is too small.

No - although it has a card slot, it`s not.
And according to Pace they have no plans currently to allow this facility.
Mind you, why anyone would want to pay to watch the subscription channels proposed is beyond me.
The beauty and simplicity of Freeview is that it is limited to the best channels and is free
TUTV is just another attempt at doing what both OnDigital and ITVDigital tried. And like them it will fail.
If people want pay TV then they have the choice of Sky or Cable.

Terrestrial TV has always been, and should always be, free.

recording NTL in isolation

gipsykid72 (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Monday, 16th February 2004, 09:33

Yes you can do this. There is an extra scart so you can get signals from VHS/DVD or seperate cable box. I`m really pleased with my machine. The 10hours capacity is adequate, functionality is excellent. The only downside for me is the menus are all now and next even though it shas capacity for 7 day advance promgrammes. When you set the timer to record you have to manually do it on a timer clock instead of just highlight the programmeyou want on the programme guide and hitting record like on sky. This method only works for now and next.
Its also a pity that the remote can`t learn to operate your tv too. Plus the remote is a bit awkward to use . One great feature though is that you can skip through a programme by jumping 60 seconds ahead or in reverse. This make cruising through commercial breaks a doddle.
Once a programme is recorded, you can`t edit it to remove add breaks to free up space on the hard drive - oh well. All in all this is a great bit of kik - you will not be dissapointed!
