Same price at Index, but with the 10% off everything voucher that is going out in most of the papers, works out at 135quid.

Which newspapers have 10% off? / Argos site down overnight / Index site out of stock

I don`t usually buy newspapers - any clues about which newspapers this 10% off voucher is in, how often it appears (e.g. is it every Saturday edition of a paper ?) and also when it expires ? 135 quid for the Liteon is very good, though the online Index site doesn`t include a model number and the 5006B is actually the latest model (with the 160GB hard disk DVD recorder 5045 to come out soon - somewhere in the 350-400 quid range, which is 100 quid less than the opposition).

BTW, I tried the Argos site several times at around 1.00am-1.20am this morning (Tuesday 26th October) and it claimed "We're currently experiencing a very high volume of visitors to our site" every time, which is nonsense of course. I reckon they back their DB up overnight and put up this fake claim (how can it be busy at 1.00am and won`t this lose them orders from night owls like me ?), whilst actually shutting down normal access to the site completely.

Still, there`s both Argos and Index shops in town, so I guess it`s off to see which ones have it in stock (it`s out of stock at the Index online site apparently, ho hum).

The 10% voucher was on the front of a small (8 page or so) colour Index insert advertising the new Christmas gift guide. The 10% applies to everything they sell, and is valid to 24/12. I got it out of last Thursday`s Mirror. Been unable to get another though, so I`ll have to make sure I buy everything in one go.

I think they are just clearing the decks of 5005`s to make way for the 5006 which has a much better spec and should be roughly the same price once they get into stores (£150- £180)..

Two years time we will be paying £50-£70 for DVD recorders, yes the 10% leaflet is on the christmas leaflet, I would have bought the Lite-on if I had not bought my panny first, you can`t moan at a £135 for a DVD recorder.

Ended up buying it from Argos...

Richard Lloyd (Competent) posted this on Tuesday, 26th October 2004, 10:59

Couldn`t find the 10% off coupon (after some embarrasing rifling through the tabloids at W.H. Smith`s!) and *both* Liverpool Index stores were out of stock of the 5005. I went to Argos, they had 5 in stock, so I got one there with a 10 quid gift voucher thrown in.

Yes, DVD recorders are continuing to come down in price, but they`re now getting close in cost to a good quality VHS recorder, so I think it`s time for the general public to start replacing their VHS units with DVD ones (Amazon have a spindle of 25 Imation DVD+RW - 4x speed ! - for 17.17 quid, that`s 68p a disc, cheaper than even a 3 hour VHS tape, so media price is actually way in favour of DVD now).

BTW, the main diffs between the 5005 and 5006B are Videoplus and progressive scan in the latter and I don`t need either feature, so the 40-50 quid difference between Argos` 5005 price and, say, Ebuyer`s 5006B price made me go for the 5005. Besides, as I said, if I like the 5005, the 5045 (DVD+160GB HD) will be the next purchase when that comes out (like VHS units, if you record a lot of TV like I do, you need at least 2 recorders...).

And a quick user report...

Just played with the 5005 at home tonight for a few hours - only major downer seems to be the noise of the fan when you`re playing or recording a disc. Other than that, only minor niggles (I record a lot, so I`m quite fussy in this respect) and the pros/cons are listed by me here.

I`d say the addition of a stereo tuner and RGB in scart were the biggest differences myself!!

Hard disc recorders are going to drop like a stone when the likes of the Lite On get in the stores. I love my Auvion HDD recorder/DVD/DivX player (130 quid off e bay, but direct from the supplier!!) but won`t hesitate adding a hard disc DVD recorder to my `stable` of electrical products when they get down in price a bit!!
