It can be made Multi-region (see the remote hacks page - it`s listed there) - although I`d recommend a hardware fix for the long term. Not too sure about the MP3s though! But for £110 you can`t really complain!

there is remote hack, see this website for the code. I read it somewhere it can read mp3 as well in this website in the past
