RE: Liteon 5005 £109.99 at Index
Is the Liteon 5005 any good? worth binning the vcr for?
yabba
Yes the 5005B is an excellent replacement for the VCR.
Yes there are better machines that may do more but I reckon the 5005B will do all that the average Joe wants it to do.
Should you buy one I would not record anything at the six hour setting as TBH it is at best VCD level.
The four hour (A bit like SVCD) setting is perfectly viewable however if you want to record a movie then record it at the two hour setting as in all honesty it is almost perfect.
Also in the near future Lite-On are hoping to release a firmware update that will add a three hour setting which will record halfway between excellent (two hour) and watchable(four hour) setting.
TBH for a ton it is well worth the money.

You probably have a unit that was manufactured after April 2004 and as such you will not be able to update the firmware with an official update.
You should be able to copy your VHS to DVD , provided the tapes do not have any copy protection. If the tapes do have copy protection then try using RCA cables rather than a scart, as some users say this will allow you to copy your own tapes.
There are apparently hacked firmware updates that remove the macrovision protection but I have no idea if they work or not. I would probably leave flashing the F/W with the hacked version until I knew from several other users that it worked on machines made about the same date as your own one.

A couple of questions if you dont mind lads....
1.What is the quality like on VCD and SVCD.
2. How many minutes can you fit on a CD-R,with VCD and SVCD.
3.Does the machine run hot, and is the fan noise a problem.
4.Can you press record and then will the machine then start recording automaticaly where the last recording finshed,or do you have to set it up.
Thank you. :)

On VCD in all honest the quality is at best similar to a well worn VHS while on SVCD the quality appears a good bit better than VHS.

The maximum you can fit at SVCD setting on a CDR is 37minutes 44 seconds. It makes no difference whether the blank CDR is 80 or 90 minutes from what I have experienced . At VCD apparently the limit is about 67 minutes I think.

TBH the noise of the fan is only noticable on booting up the unit and on ours is only present for a couple of minutes. Our unit certainly heats up but the 5005 is still cooler than our Sky+ box if that is any help to you.

On a DVD/R the recording starts at the end of the previous recording unlike DVD Ram which searches out all the available space on the disc (I think :) )
TBH at £110 this unit is well worth a try.

The date of manufacture should be on the barcode sticker on the box.

PS use the DVD RW that comes with the unit and try recording at the 1,2,4 and 6 hour settings and you will see the differences and be able to decide more accurately which settings you prefer.
I recorded 5 minutes of the same episode of SG-1 at all the settings and plumped for the 4 hour setting for series recordings and 2 hours for movies as that suits our tastes.
You may find other settings suit you better and as such phannying about for a 1/2 hour with the DVD/RW you got with the unit will give you a better idea.

Thank for the answers Choagy. :)
