How good is the Aldi PC compared to ACER T180 DC at £299.99 from Comet

The `free` upgrade to Vista Home Premium requires an additional £14 for the discs. I already have a Freecom DVB-T. Other than the bigger hard disc and a different (better?) graphics card I suppose it comes down to the CPU

The Intel D 915 Dual Core Processor 2.8GHz runs quite a bit faster than the AMD Athlon 64 x2 3800+ and I believe that currently Intel dual core processors outperform the AMD equivalent.

Any advice appreciated.

PS does anyone know if the stocks of the ALDI PC are likely to be very limited?

core2duo`s do, by a very large margin, but this is a D915, which is a few revisions & a generation behind the core2`s (although they are obviously still dual core)

but personaly, if i had to choose between those 2, i would deffo go for the aldi pc, it`s a better spec in pretty much every department (inc cpu) but the only downside for me would be Vista, i`d prefer to continue with XP for at least another 6 months untill vista settles in & gets all the compatability issue`s sorted out.

That said, depending on the programs you currently use, vista might not cause you any probs, it`s worth listing you most used progs + anti-virus etc, then checking compatability :)

thanks Ogster, that`s very useful.

One of the advantages of the ACER would be that you could keep running XP Media Centre and upgrade when you want (don`t know if there is a time limit for the free upgrade).

thats true, but imo, the spec of the aldi pc is such that i would still go for that, even @ £100 more & with vista...

EDIT= also, the AMD based machine doesn`t have a detailed spec, for instance, if it`s a 64bit socket 939 based pc, it`ll only have "standard" ddr, whilst the intel is deffo ddr2, & i`ver found ddr2 to be visibly better than ddr, esp for video encoding etc.

My Dad is hopefully going to get one of these and swap it for mine so I can have the Medion :)

I will then stick XP Pro on the Medion and have lots of fun!

Oggy, how good is the GFX card on the Medion?

heres a better link for the aldi pc http://uk.aldi.com/images/data_product/100192406445c09aa442577.pdf

as for the gfx, it realy depends what your doing with it, it should run most games just fine, & it`s generally better than your average built to order box, as are most of the aldi specials, but if your a serious gamer, you might want to upgrade, but it`s still a good performer, especialy for the money, also, i wouldn`t chuck vista off without giving it a try first, it might not give you any probs, & consider that this system has a tv tuner etc, so getting xp drivers/comparative software might be a pain.

hope this helps...

I got the Acer T180DC and it is a steal at that price.
It has socket AM2 and 1gb of DDR 2 533mhz as well as Realtek Hi definition audio and Geforce 6100 graphics (I put in a geforce 7900GT that I won). Also Seagate Sata 3.0 160gb HD and dual layer DVD writer. It is a fantastic machine being sold for over £100 more now it has Vista preinstalled.
Did I mention 9-in-1 card reader and 7 USB sockets all in a micro ATX factor with a really well built case; room for another two RAM chips, SATA drive and IDE drive.
Plus, as mentioned, you get to use Win XP Pro (well, Media Centre) until your Home Premium upgrade arrives for just £14 P+P.
They are going fast though and being replaced with Vista machine for £399 but ebuyer have some as well as lots of positive user review (350+?).
Best buy I made all year...and no lining up at Aldi at 8.00AM for a chance to get one.

problem is, even tho the Acer has ddr 2 (like the aldi model) it`s still totaly out-specced by the aldi model in pretty much every department.

but i must admit, if it where me, i couldn`t be arsed queing up then rushing around in the hope i get one.....

but then, i`d build it myself 10 times out of 10 anyway ;)
