I see there was a recent post for this, but here is another alternative, and from the High Street.

Good buy for someone, and seems to be in stock at some stores here in the West Midlands.

Just need a cheap SD card, not from Argos, and maybe a spare third party battery and as always with digital cameras you don`t get a case.

I opted for a Sony H1 about a year ago, also on clearance from Argos, otherwise I may have gone for this model myself.

Plenty of American reviews available on the web.

amongst others, to help you choose.
Also, bear in mind things like the panny has a 12x optical zoom and the Canon has a 6x optical zoom, this may have a major impact on your final choice (the 12x optical zoom was one of, if not the major factor in choosing the Sony H1), along with the type of battery/battery pack used to power the camera. Again, my Sony uses 2xAA batteries, you can get them anywhere and are cheap (I just got an "intelligent" rapid charger, 4x 2700mA AA batteries and a battery holder for about £15 delivered from 7Dayshop).

I just bought a Nikon Coolpix L11 for £90 from Amazon.

I checked it out on Which and the L6 was a Best Buy. they haven`t gotten around to reviewing the L10, L11 or L12 yet, but i reckon this one should be fairly good.

Its the optical zoom that tempts me
