In Milton Keynes last night you had
the HMV Clearout,
the Woolworths, Our Price and Virgin BOGOFs,
and no doubt WHSmiths had something going on too.
So it`s a good time to get to the stores and stock up on back catalogs.
I wonder how long before A.I., and Akira come down to a tenner each?
199 `discs` in the collection, average cost £10.17 a disc.
RE: HMV Sale - Some Gems
Oh and I also bought Charade for £7.99 but that`s going back as it is the worst DVD transfer I have ever seen - avoid at all costs
i saw heathers there for £6.99! whoohoo!!!
Charade doesnt have the best of transfers but its decent.
Its produced by an independant company, the film is eons old.
The extras are really interesting and there is a commentary. Its way better than the previous version released in the UK.
If you want a better version, you can get the criterion collection version for around £25-£30 which is too much for a single dvd for me.
RE: HMV Sale - Some Gems
I agree that the extras seem ok on the Charade disc, especially at such a low price and I was looking forward to listening to the commentary track. But in all honesty the quality of the transfer is very low on this disc with jaggies affecting the image quite badly, especially when viewed at close range.
I appreciate that the only other option is to buy the expensive Criterion version (which I probably won`t do as I don`t like the film THAT much) but as a former cinema programmer I`m more concerned with image quality than disc extras. However, I can appreciate that others might still find the disc good value if they can live with the transfer.
Now I have to decide what to exchange it for!
Had a look through the clearout items at HMV.CO.UK this morning, best bargain I saw was Blue Velvet for 4.99. That`ll do.
The R2 Blue Velvet is 4:3 and gets the worst review I have seen on dvdtimes.
I got the R1 version from futureent for a tenner and has a good 2.35:1 anamorphic transfer.
Also there is a special R1 edition coming out on 6/4/2002 for about £13 from dvdimport.
NO! ........ sorry didn`t realise u were standing so close..... the HMV Blue Velvet IS widescreen with a Hopper interview - according to the cover. I have heard that the transfer is poor though - but I`ll be the judge of that!
Just bought Dune for a fiver =O)
