I see that Play have got the R2 set for £39.99 is this the best deal at the moment? (assuming theres no customs charges) I also heard a rumour that the R1 set `may` contain a few of the "cock-ups" that occurred whilst recording whilst R2 doesn`t. can anyone confirm this?

The R1 set is infact complete, unlike the R2 one, R1 has 5 Discs including Back and Forth, The Cavalier Years and Christmas Carol (i think) and there are extras on each of the series discs too including out-takes on series 1 (again i think), www.futureent.com may confirm these better than i can.

"@*^ing ?+!#ing balls!!! Already ordered the R2 4 disc set from play - had I know the R1 version had extras, I`d have gone for that.

DVDBoxoffice have the R1 5 disk set for just over £60, according to them the extas include -
Outtakes
Blackadder Specials
Karaoke
Cast Biography Gallery
Who`s Who in Blackadder
What`s What - Interactive Guide to Historical Figures and Events
Blackadder`s Christmas Carol
Blackadder in The Cavalier Years
Archival Richard Curtis Interview
Blackadder Sing-Along

Thanks for your advice guys I think that for an extra £20 all of those extras that the BBC kindly gives everyone except the good honest UK licence paying....i`ll run the C&E gauntlet and go for the R1 set. I don`t suppose anyone knows what the damage could be if my parcel does get rumbled by HMC&E though?

3.5% duty on value
17.5 % vat on total inc delivery

Try DV-Depot - could be dearer, but dhl delivery with no `Imperial entaglements....` Compare the cost with duty etc. & you should be able to save a bit.

Hi I have bought the 5 disks R1 box set and R1 does indeed offer lots of extra interviews and background material not present on R2.

Each and every disk in the set has:

A# "who`s who in Black Adder" A feature which is basically a text base extra which is read out loud by Tony Robinson (as Baldrick) This gives filmographies and bios for the actors in the show. There is of course some overlapping in this info between the discs.
B# "What`s what": A text-based guide (read by Tony Robinson), which explains obscure real life English historical references to stupid Americans. This is quite informative and fun. This is unique for each disk
C# trailers

However the R1 disk 5 with Back and Forth is pan & scan instead of anamorphic wide screen like R2. So therefore I recommend buying the R2 version of Back and Forth.

As for the rest of the R1 box set, actually the box doesn`t contain ANY different stuff compared to the R1 single disk releases so my recommendation is:

"The Black Adder" Disk 1: buy R1 as it has all six episodes of Season 1, Karaoke + extras A and B
"Black Adder II" Disk 2 buy the single R1 as it has all six episodes of Season 2 and interviews + extras A and B
"Black Adder The third" Disk 3 the single R1 buy as it has all six episodes of Season 3 and interviews and the comic relief special "The cavalier years" + extras A and B
"Black Adder goes Fourth " Disk 4 buy the single R1 as it has all six episodes of Season 3 and interviews and the xmas special "Black Adders Christmas carol" + extras A and B
"Back and forth" Disk 5: buy R2 as it has the show in 16X9 plus the same behind the scenes special as on R1. Also it has subtitles

CDWOW has all these R1 disks for £11.99 each.

The only bad thing about R1 is that sadly there are no subtitles whatsoever.

Conclusion: buy discs 1-4 R1, disk 5, R2.
By the way, buying the discs individual means you wont get stung by customs (like I was when i bought the R1 box)

Hope this is helpful

Thanks for all the info erlryd, great work!
By the way, what`s the picture quality like on R1?

Picture quality is slightly better on R1 than R2 for the first 4 seasons, but this is only because R2 is so totally crap. Back and forth is better on R2.

Like I said getting the first 4 disks on R1 is the way to go.

Thanks for all of the advice guys, particularly erlryd. I originally rushed in and ordered the complete R1 set from DVDSoon for £52 inc P&P but cancelled that on Thurs after they still hadn`t posted it after 7 days despite saying "On hand 24hrs" when I ordered it. I went to CD-WOW`s site and ordered them on R1 individually (to avoid risking £15 C&E - also noticed DVDSoon`s set was in 4:3 format!) for £11.49 each using the 50p vouchers and they arrived this morning (Sat) - good service or what?
