Ratios - Help needed

michrich (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 26th September 2002, 15:16

I currently have a standard 4:3 TV and a new DVD Dansai 952 player. I want to buy some DVD`s but they all appear to be for widescreen TV`s. I don`t want to upgrade my TV for another year or so.
Please advise which is the best format DVD`s to buy for viewing now and later when I get a new TV. At present I find 1:235 gives very large black lines at top and bottom. Should I buy anamorphic?

Thanks

Most DVD discs come widescreen as standard. You don`t normally get a choice of Widescreen/Full Screen (although you did with Harry Potter and may with Spiderman). Sometimes you do get both versions on one disc. As far as I know Anamorphic discs stretch the image to a Widescreen TV.

So, I`m guessing if you watch a DVD in Widescreen on your 4:3 TV you will get black bars top and bottom. Make sure your DVD settings are set to 4:3 otherwise you may get a squashed image on your 4:3 TV.

I have a Widescreen TV as that`s how I prefer to watch my films (even with a black bar at top and bottom sometimes). So, it`s really up to you how you prefer to watch your movies.

Hope this helps.
