Page 1 of Ripping dvd`s

I am trying to back up my dvd`s, i am using smartripper to rip the dvd but when i have finished ripping it and record to dvd it wont work on my stand alone player which will play dvd-rs but it will work on my pc can anyone help

Don`t know about DVD ripping but when I had similar problems with CD`s not being recognised on Hi-Fi`s but playing on PC etc it was usually down to the fact I hadn`t finalised the disc when using Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum.

thanks choagy but i`m using nero 5 and it tells you its writing leadout track

Only other thing I can suggest would be to buy a few different blank DVD-R`s , Memorex / Traxdata etc and see if you have any joy.Going by some of the problems experienced by other board members it might be simply a case of trial and error with media..

Just started backing up dvd`s myself, and I think (as long as your copying the full content and not stripping out any id`s and stuff) it sounds like the media your using, I have had mixed result with different types of media, some not being recognised at all. It has been recomended to use "Datasafe Media Limited Classic Generation 3 DVD-R" which are recommended as the most compatible cheep discs, not tried them myself yet though. You might also want to check out if your standalone can read dvd-r`s check out vcdhelp.com it tells you there if your player can read dvd-r`s.

Once you`ve ripped the dvd with smartripper you could try converting it to an mpeg with a program called TMPGEnc iirc. Then it should be simple enough to make a VCD with nero. Takes a while to encode the mpeg tho (about 5hrs on my 1.3Ghz machine!)
