Warner Brothers dvd`s - quality????

xeno (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 15th February 2001, 21:33

My girlfriend recently bought me a copy of gremlins on dvd from the warner brothers reduced range(£13).She bought it from our price we looked forward to watching it untill it started.

The quality was the worst i have ever seen from a dvd -it looked like someone had taped it of the telly and then converted it to dvd.

These discs come with NO extra features and a s***e box.I looked through all the titles they had and none had extra features -whats the point?

Is this a typical example of warner brothers attitude to uk dvd customers?

poor quality is a special feature of most of warners discs that are £12.99 or £15.99.

Warner just seem to do poor standards conversions of the R1 NTSC discs rather than sourcing a decent PAL print.

Well I have Heat, L.A. Confidential and Deep Blue Sea Warner Bros. discs and they all have excellent picture quality

Like Quality Streets, there`s always some sh8 innit.

Looking at a film like Gremlins, it`s easy to see why the transfer is pants. It`s a old film to start, it`s a cheap film, it`s a barebone disc and it`s a film that alot of people have seen and unlikely to buy it in droves.(<----not the best reply for sure but some points I keep to myself)
I would understand WB not putting effort into the transfer process (although it is a joke not to make it as well as they could`ve, I am certain there were docu`s and stuff that came out when it was made). I buy alot of Hong Kong discs, and it comes with the saying that you pay for what you get, I would like to see better transfers for all the films that I love, but in some cases, these are going to be the only disc of the film.
But have to agree that Gremlins should have a better disc, as it was and still is a classic (but also bear in mind when these discs were released, they were very early on, when WB were just trying to release their back catalogue onto the format). Does anyone know whether WB remaster discs? I know it happened with Exorcist, any others?
Can`t really say WB are crap or great, like all companies, they will release sh8 , but they do have one of the cheapest prices for a studio.

Many of Warnkers discs in the budget range were early discs.

Many of Warnkers discs in the budget range are crap standards conversions or rehashes or early R1 Warner releases.

Many of Warnkers discs in the budget ranges are stripped of all extras that are found on the R1 version.

Exorcist got a remaster because it is a 25th Anniversary release, and they messed that one up as well (they used the wrong documentary which is a lot shorter than the R1 version and the chapter listing doesn`t work with the one found on the R2 disc)

Like Quality Streets, there`s always some sh8 innit.<----I like, I keep :-)

Thanks cw2000 for pointing these specical features that the region 2 disc has (tee hee), and I was gonna hobble off to ASDA and get it. In that case, I`ll scout on the net fer it.
