Page 1 of Once Upon a Time in Mexico - damn good film

I own and really enjoy the first two chapters in Rodriguez`s Mariachi series, and have just reviewed the third - damn good film, best of the bunch, and presented on an excellent disc. It comes out on Monday 8 March. :-)

have to agree with you rik, saw it last night, thoroughly enjoyed it. And, without stating the bleeding obvious, rodriguez through and through if you likeed the first two, you`ll love this one.

Each to their own, but I thought it was pants !

I mean come on guys climbing church walls with their bare hands??

And as for the gunfights very lame and not very imaginative, and all that black powder smoke just made the firing of the guns look naff.

I hate films where the bad guys fire off about 200 rounds and can`t hit anything, even from a few feet away.

Sorry but I thought it was the worst of the the trilogy by a long way, bought it one day sold it the next.

I agree with you there mikeyb, it was v. disappointing.
Seemed to focus too much on Johnny Depps character - even though I did enjoy his performance, and it felt too rushed.
Ruben Blades character was good too, but I don`t think I`ll buy it - I`ll stick with Desperado.

I didn`t care much for it either. Both Desperado and El Mariachi are far better films.

I liked it, as I did with the other two. It`s just silly nonsense, but fun all the same. If it`s cheap in the shops tomorrow I might buy it :D

ive never had any interest in any of rodriquez`s films, and saw this because i wanted to see something new and that was only on for 90mins. i actually thought it was very good, mainly for the reasons others have stated. i did think it got overly complicated, maybe that was to do with the big cast, i actually liked pushing depp`s character more to the forefront, although the flashback scenes with banderas and hayek were very good.

but i liked the extras, especially the 10minute film school thing were he showed some of the tricks to making a film seem well more than it is, how to do various shots without spending all day on them, and the tour round his studio all gave me an insight into his way of film making which i have to say certainly works, and is a refreshing change from the other makings of docu`s you normally get.

i doubt wether ill watch his other films but i like the way he does them.

I really like El Mariachi and Desperado, but I thought the third one was awful. The only real saving grace was Depp`s performance, and as for the quality when Depp goes into the kitchen to kill that guy, damn high definition. :p

It`s disjointed, badly acted and scripted. I have been watching Robert Rodriguez` career since it`s inception - El Mariachi. I even read both his books (you`ll be hard pressed to find the second one). I really enjoyed Desperado, From Dusk Till Dawn and The Faculty -but he`s just getting progressively worse. I mean he can`t even make this picture look right and he`s had 3 chances at it!!!!!

I was very nearly tempted to leave the theatre - except I was in New York and it was 110 degrees outside, so I stayed put and tried to read a magazine.

I have to agree with noveltycondomhead - what a load of rubbish that movie was. I hadn`t seen the El Mariachi or Desperado so was going into this one with an open mind. The trailer gave the impression that Salma Hayek would appear for longer than 5 minutes and that the movie would be a bit of popcorn fun. I found the movie to be infuriatingly overcomplicated for the sake of trying to make the movie more sophisticated than it was or needed to be. The `plot` was a mess, the script appalling and the acting wooden (even from Willem Dafoe). The action scenes were average for a 21st century action movie and the `bat-like` qualities of a blind Johnny Depp (borrowed, no doubt, from Daredevil) just made me laugh.

The DVD could be laden with extras and priced £1 and you still wouldn`t get me anywhere near it. It was a complete affront to the other `Once Upon a Time ...` movies - Sergio Leone must be spinning in his grave.
