Not definite, but encouraging. :D
Erm...
....says it all really :/
RE: THE HOBBIT might happen afterall...
Well lets hope it comes off, as the LOTR trilogy has become an instant classic and films like this are few and far between.
Reminded me of the same fantastic impact on the public, that the origional Star Wars trilogy had, all those years ago.

Yeah, and the films have that same magic quality (well, not quite the same magic as Star Wars ;) ).
But Star Wars was a phenomenon that came out of nowhere. LOTR was a mega-budget project. Although both were born out of passion :)
But the box office figures for LOTR don`t stand up to that "phenomenon" status, but are highly impressive none-the-less. The last film that had people going nuts (and with disgusting Box Office takings) was Titanic... :/
Anyway, hope the Hobbit gets made ;)

Hmmm....Chewie, I think you`ll find that ROTK is the 2nd highest grossing film ever after Titanic (US & International combined). When you add in FOTR and TTT (because it is essentailly 1 film split into 3 anyway). Then LOTR has taken a shade over 3 Billion Dollars which is more than double Titanic.
So how can you say:

Frist off, Lord of the Rings is three movies, Titanic is one. You can`t pretend they`re one movie, Box Office doesn`t work like that.
Return of the King is, according to unadjusted Box Office, the second highest grossing film of all time. But you have to remember that ticket prices have increased a lot in the 90s, and have continued to increase ever since. So, to get a proper idea of what is the "all time" greatest hit, you have to look at the tickets sold or adjusted gross (number of tickets sold * the current average ticket price). When you do this, the Lord of the Rings movies fall down the list, and Gone with the Wind and Star Wars are at the top of the charts.
I`m not saying LOTR hasn`t performed well, it has, and the numbers are brilliant. But it hasn`t been a phenomenon. People didn`t go crazy all around the world like they did for Star Wars and Titanic.
A "phenomenon" in the movies is usually unexpected. Star Wars came out of nowhere. Titantic didn`t have one weekend where it broke $30m, it just kept taking the same amount every week. LOTR was expected to do well. It was a gamble, but the money and skill that went into marketing it would have guarenteed at least $500m worldwide for Fellowship alone. Thankfully it took a lot more :)
