what is RCE?
am I right in thinking this is a new updated version of region encoding which has been invented to try and circumvent playback multi region machines?
This latest attempt at RCE currently being used by Columbia Tristar and Warner Brothers, was orginally designed I believe to stem the massive export of R1 disks into Asia.
The code checks the region setting on the player and if it is found to be hardware set to multi-region or software set to multi-region then it displays a map of the world and a warning explaining that the disk is for R1 only and that you can`t play it.
However it hasn`t been as successful as they would have liked. In most cases where a player is hardware chipped to be MR then it does seem to prevent playback, although there are some workaround available such as skipping directly to chapters.
Most players with handset hacks that make them MR such as my Wharfedale 750S can remain in full MR mode and have no problems playing the disk and/or the extra features. Some software players with MR hacks are however caught by RCE and as long as they can then be manually set specifically to R1 then they work around it.
If you could get an honest answer out of the companies involved, they would probably concur that its been a big flop, in relation to the R&D cost of developing it, as probably 80-90% of the DVD players out there can either play the RCE disks anyway, or have some workaround or other.
Currently the disks I`m aware of that are affected are:
The Patriot
Hollow Man
Thomas the tank engine and the magic railroad
South Park movie
Upcoming titles reported to have RCE
6th Day
Charlies Angels
Currently as far as I`m aware only R1 disks will have RCE encoded onto them as it was the R1 export market they were trying to reduce, so titles from other regions should be safe .... for the moment !!!
If anybody else has extra info or corrections on any of the above, that would help the forum members it would be good to hear your views.
Cheers
Chris
RCE looks to see whether the DVD player is set to region 0. Those multi-region players which actually change the region to match that of the disc are unaffected.
Incedentally, I heard a story that one of the best-selling DVD players in the US couldn`t play RCE discs because it was set to region 0.

RCE? The work of the Devil, that`s what it is! I can`t quite figure out if it`s a software solution that doesn`t work or whether it`s all a bluff - hype to stop Joe Public importing R1 disks outside the US. Whatever it is, it`s just part of the continuing story of greed and customer contempt that Hollywood has for anyone living outside the good ol` US of A.
Why dont they just sell us disc with f**k all on them, the companys might be satisfied then!
Much ado about nothing, methinks!
l got a Matsui 110, which has played everying l throw at it so far including the above named HOLLOW MAN apart from Disneys Dinosaur (no real loss, boring, well made, but boring!)
l laugh at their attempts to stick up those of us living in rip off Britian
HA!
