Page 1 of Predator - Letter Box ? doooooohhhhhh
DVDs & Films Forum
I hate Letterbox ! On normal telly`s i.e Non-Widescreens, they look crap, with the picture all squeazed together in that bar in the middle of the screen. Why are they still releasing films like this ? What really annoys me, is that the R1 is anamorphic, and has DTS. Damn you!

Me too.
Solution:Don`t buy it.
I`m holding out for the double box set with DTS
No compromises!
(What a bummer when you have to boycott disks you want `cos some twit won`t go the extra mile)
Harrumph!!!!!

I agree with you on features missing from R1 discs. With widescreen pictures my DVD player allows me to set the output to pan and scan for non widescreen TVs. This fill the complete TV screen. Have you tried this ?

"Why are they still releasing films like this?"
Films are released like that in the first place. They are then "squeazed together" to fit naff 4:3 TV`s.
Buy a widescreen - and see what you`ve been missing.

is it not better watching films on a 4.3 tv in letterbox mode? dont you actually get more of the picture as youre watching it in the equivalent of a wide screen mode??? if not then whats the point of having a letterbox mode in the first place then? this is what ive always been told, unless someone can tell me any differently.

Movies are screened at the cinema in "widescreen" 16:9 or 2.25:1 or whatever the heck it is.
When they are transferred to TV they cut the sides off and squash the image. Watching a DVD in widescreen mode on a 4:3 TV will indeed give you the *full* picture but with those nasty black bands that everyone hates (never heard complaints in the cinema). But the image is necessarily smaller. Hence 4:3 owners, Cholmondely-Warner types living in the 19th Century ;^), see widescreens as 4:3 TV`s "with the top & bottom cut off" when in fact 4:3 TV`s have had the sides of the image cut off.
A bigger widescreen will give you the same height image as a regular TV with the added bonus of how it was meant to be seen in the cinema.

Well I hate pan `N` scan! It totally ruins a movie. You miss around 50% of the whole film. I see some network TV stations are finally coming to their senses, Cliffhanger and Under Seige have both been shown in widescreen on BBC1 (1.85:1) and that is progress for you.
RE: Predator - Letter Box ? doooooohhhhhh
originally many many years ago, cinemas were 4:3, then TV came along so some smarty pants in the film industry `invented` wide screen movies in order to gain the edge over TV. and now TVs are moving to wide screen (thank f**k).
and most DVDs aren`t 4:3 - if you want that then stick to video!

Xeno said.."Are you taking the p***?"
Nope.
Perfectly serious. If you`d read the threads about being exploited with extras and buying disks only to be gazumped with Ultimate editions, then you`d get to the stage where you say `I`m mad as Hell, and I`m not gonna take it anymore!!`
I will not buy good films in crap formats;
I will not be tempted by favorite films without the soundtracks they deserve;
I will only buy good anamorphic transfers with a decent soundtrack;
Extras are there to tempt me-get the behind me, Warners!
(commandments 11,12,13 & 14 oops.. I`m an atheist!!)
That`s why I need DVD Reviewer!
