Looks like the decision to remove the sex scene cost them more than they thought
Quote:
In its first three days of release, the $124-million sci-fi epic took in just $12.4 million, opening in fourth place behind the previous weekend`s top draws, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," "Wedding Crashers" and "Fantastic Four."
That means "The Island" grossed just 10% of its production budget, placing it ahead of "Cinderella Man" and "Kingdom of Heaven" as the most expensive dud of the summer so far.
Bizarrely, i was actually looking forward to this one, even though I find Bay unimaginative and formulaic in his film-making. I`ll still see it, just to make an informed decision.

I wouldn`t look too much into it. It`s been released alongside some real crowd pleasers, where this one appears to be more for those who are looking to use their brain when they watch a film. I still want to see it, in the same way I still want to see the other films that grossed higher this week.
If you ask me, its just a bad release date. If this came out in September/October time I`m sure it would do much better.
Here`s Chucky!
It`s just been marketed wrong. They gave everything away in the trailer. The cast Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johanson (sp?) who are good actors, but not money magnets.
In a summer of sci-fi action, this had absolutely no fandom backbone (being an "original" film, although I do use that word lightly ;) ).
Time will tell. It may have good legs. The Italian Job remake opened small and it ended up with over $100m and a greenlit sequel.
It`s just one of these things. But general word of mouth has been good.

You do know this is a Michael Bay film, right? No offence, but his previous films haven`t exactly required many neurons to `enjoy`. (Bad Boys 2 springs to mind)

Lol, I watched Bad Boys 2 again last night. Two and a half hours of foul language and extreme violence, gotta love it :D
The Rock is his only genuinely great film, but Armageddon and Bad Boys are great fun. And I don`t mind Pearl Harbor ;)

Yes, as he`s broken free from the Bruckheimer reins, but i still can`t help but think there`s still gonna be that circular tracking shot as either Ewen or Scarlett (or both) rise from a crouching position. Possibly with an american flag flapping in the background...

best headline ive read for this is `Bays `Island` Deserted...`
apparently, according to ebert, its a film of two halves. And neither of them are that great. And yeh, its true, the trailer looks pretty much like a complete synopsis, so whats the point in paying to see it?
What im listening to (if youre interested)
RE: Bay`s `The island` bombs...
you pay to see it so you can make your own mind up.................
or is that to hard to do these days?
RE: Bay`s `The island` bombs...
Oh I`ll see it eventually. You`ll notice I haven`t actually commented on the film itself yet, just Bay
