Only just seen Cars..

sj (Elite) posted this on Sunday, 29th October 2006, 22:55

Only just got around to watching Cars on DVD...
Heard really mixed reports on it but thought it was really good. Easily the best looking of the animated films yet - some of the reflections, water and smoke effects are amazing - you really forget you`re watching an artificially generated film.
Some great lines, not as funny as some other Pixar/Disney/Dreamworks.. films so probably not as memorable - imagine it will get better with repeated viewings. Liked the line about the `Piston Cup` and the old hick pickup truck doesn`t hear it properly and says `He did what in the cup?..` :)
One other note - the 5.1 mix is easily the best I`ve heard from the genre.. :D brilliant use of the rears..

Loved the Pixar drive-in scene at the end credits too... :)

I think that was the problem. I enjoyed it at the cinema, but there wasa bit too much of "look at this, we`re Pixar, we`re amazing" willy waving, and the script seemed less important.
The long drive by waterfalls especially.

i seem to remember enjoying the beginning, the middle dragged, and the end was v good.

the credits bit as you say was v good.

I remember seeing all the teaser trailers in the cinema and being distinctly underwhelmed. Its probably the first pixar movie that i wasnt really excited about. Even Nemo, which I thought looked a little gay, piqued my interest by looking interesting and, finally turned out to be excellent.

There is just something about the characterisation of the cars that doesnt work for me. I thought the characters, which are always a pixar films strongest point, looked a little lame and featureless. The jokes fell flat and it didnt really have the `magic` all the other movies did.

It does, however, look great and, yeah, is probably the best looking movie, but in terms of actual content, I think its the worst by some margin.

IMHO, of course. Plus, im not 8 so im hardly the best person to judge the relative merits of pixar films, but there you go.....

It`s easily the weakest pixar film yet.

Watch the incredibles and then cars. You`d swear they were made by a different company.

Cars was ok. But yes. Definitley not the best.

Yup, agree with that. :)

Yeah, I agree - they`re not quite there but that`s not to say there aren`t some good characters. Certainly from a kids point of view, Lightning is a cool character. The goofy pickup truck is another. For adults though, nothing really like Sully/Mike or Woody/Buzz though.

As I said, I think, if I watch it again, it would get better. Wouldn`t say `easily` the weakest..

Agree.. :) Would put it ahead of the likes of Shark Tale and Robots though...
Anyone seen it on DVD yet? The 5.1 sound really is fantastic!! :)
As I said though, this wasn`t a film that I`d particularly looked forward to but once I`d seen it was very pleasantly surprised. Which is nice. :)

Its certainly better than the epilepsy inducing Shark Tale, but I actually kind of enjoyed Robots. I think its because I am now programmed to say `Robot` in the style of Dr. Zoidberg....

Of course, Robots and Shark Tale weren`t Pixar movies, so that puts Cars at the bottom of the Pixar pile.

Anyone mention they were? :/ But why does them not being Pixar automatically make Cars bottom? Even if it is, where`s the relevance? :p
Liked the bit where they SUV`s were going off road and complaining about the mud too - "...but I`ve never been off-road.."
:)

cars should be rated relative to what`s available for kids movie wise which puts it fairly high up as that`s mostly trash at the moment.
