Page 1 of Ratatouille - very poor

If any of you are thinking of taking your kids to see Ratatouille, save your dosh.
Very poor.
Our daughter wanted to leave after an hour, and I could see why.
Going by the gradual rise in volume in the theatre, she was far from the only kid bored either. :(

I absolutely agree, it was dire. I don`t think the goings-on in a restaurant kitchen is something kids are generally interested in.... big-eyed cartoon rat or not.

I felt it was overlong, and worst, it lacked any of the typical Pixar humour. There was not one laugh out loud moment in it, from my recollection.

God knows what state the film was in before Brad Bird picked up the reins...

I`m with you xfg, I think the subject matter is the root of the problem.
Did any of you get the short film beforehand ?
About the trainee alien, attempting to abduct someone ?

Even if it had been the best film in the world ever I would have refused to see it on principal on the count of being forced to sit through that f***ing patronising `Knock-off Nigel` advert about twenty times. In fact, I might just download the DVD rip when it`s available to make a mockery of the crap spouted in that infuriating piece of industry propaganda.

I thought it was excellent and the kids in the cinema barely made a sound - you can generally tell what they think of a film by how many run past you to the toilet and in the case of Ratatouille, there was hardly any. It`s not up there with Toy Story and Toy Story 2 as Pixar`s best, but is a fantastic technical achievement and is a fine example of how to tell a story well. It put all the recent animated dross in the shade, but I have to say I preferred the Lifted short to the feature film.

That can`t be denied, but does that make it a good film for kids ?
Of all the films of it`s genre (Toy Story / Ice age / Flushed away etc) it`s the first one that gave me the impression of being made by adults who didn`t really understand kids.
Lengthy spells between action sequences, lengthy dialogue scenes etc.etc.
Simple fact is, it`s boring.
As soon as I mentioned it in here ( just back from week off ) the other parents said "we could have told you not to bother".
First time that`s happened for a film of this type.

Another point: As a pet rat fan I don`t think it being a film about a rat (wild rat or any animal around food though = eew) was the problem, but I am glad its s***eness will save pet shop rats from those idiot parents who give into their child`s pleading for a terrapin without any research because of a character they like! :D

I read a few reviews lately and the words "A classic" and "Masterpiece" were being bandied about so I really had high hopes for this and was looking forward to seeing it. I thought it was boring. I can`t put my finger on why though - all the `ingredients` were there.. ;)
Seriously though, I don`t think the problem was setting it in a kitchen/restaurant... a decent script set in such a place with food and animals has incredible scope for 80 minutes or so of laughs.. it just didn`t have them :(
Not a patch on The Incredibles. Or even, for me, Cars.

Well I loved it, though I can see why little children might be bored by it. I laughed a number of times, especially the gag about the resistance fighter told just as the guy goes sneakily into the larder. I found it had a lot of subtle jokes like that, that kids just wouldn`t pick up on, because they are thick.

Ian Holm is great in it too, he should be given more comedy roles.
