My Name Is Bruce

admars (Elite) posted this on Friday, 13th February 2009, 20:14

a while ago my local picture house cinema announced for 1 night only in March they`re showing My Name Is Bruce, but I just noticed at play.com it`s coming out on dvd next month.

So, my missus and I are big fans, love Evil Dead films, Bubbo Ho Tep, various cameos he has in things, so the question is, do we see this at the cinema, or just buy DVD?

The film has mixed reviews, but l from what I understand (trying to avoid spoilers) that`s to be expected as it`s more or less aimed at Bruce`s fans rather than "average Joe".

I`m sure it has been mentioned here a while ago, but couldn`t find a thread mentioning it, I had forgotton all about it until my weekly cinema email arrived.

Cheers

Al

edit, just found it
good old google advance search :)

Personally as a huge Campbell fan id say get the dvd and get along to the cinema to see it on the big screen, afterall if youre a fan itll be worth it.

On a side note ive noticed on the official uk site for the film that Bruce is claiming to have not been in the UK for 21 years before promoting this film, thats funny as i met him at Collectormania in Coventry last march!!!

Lying to your fans, forshame :)

It really isn`t good enough to see in the cinema. I really like Bruce Campbell, and so was keen to see this, but was sorely disappointed. It had a few laughs, but the low budget of the film is on show most of the time.

It`s fine, and Campbell does a great job of sending himself up, just lower your expectations and you might enjoy yourself. But definitely DVD only, trust me.

If it was showing within 100 miles of me id go regardless of the quality, cant beat a bit of Campbell at the movies :)

It has its moments but I don`t think it has anything for non-Bruce fans.

I`m a big fan of Campbell but to be honest thought this was very poor.

Pretty bland, not particularly funny and instantly forgettable.

Cheers all, think I`ll get her DVD for birthday or christmas, when it`s round a fiver then :) I bought her Man with the Screaming Brain one year, and she watched it without me, i told her I wanted to watch it, and she told me I was lucky not to have seen it :)

I think that`s the problem, we like him, but he does know how to pick a turkey sometimes! That interview made a good read,

Cheers

Just watched My Name Is Bruce.

First things first, you have to be a serious Campbell fan to both `get` and enjoy this movie. Not just a fan of the Evil Dead films but of the likes of Mindwarp, Chase Moran, Alien Apocalypse, Ice Breaker etc.....

In short you have to be the uber fan that Bruce mocks in this very film, a claim i can sadly make.

Its a satirical look at the process behind making bad movies as well as the idolisation that Bruce gets from the likes of me. The movie does have a weak plot and the effects arent exactly groundbreaking but that is exactly the point. It starts slow but really picks up once Bruce gets on scren, and thats because what this film is is a homage to Bruce whilst at the same time taking a mocking side swipe at that very fact.

Several times in this film i laughed out loud and quite frankly i enjoyed this film immensely, despite tha fact that it does have a laugh at mine and my kinds expense.

If youre not a Campbell fan youll hate this, youll think its pointless trash that should never have seen the light of day. If youre a Campbellite like me then youll love it and no doubt will watch it over and over till you can quote it line for line.

From me it gets 4 out of 5, however for the layman im afraid it would only get 1.5 or 2

Missus and I just watched it, Kennedys316 above pretty much hits the nail on the head. We both enjoyed it, laughed out loud a bit, but I`m sure that was at the obvious references we got.

Glad we watched it, for £5 on DVD it`s good, but saying that, glad didn`t spend £15 - £20 for the pair of us to see it at the cinema.

As most ppl say, for the serious bruce fans only
