Page 1 of A Question about 3D Films

Hello everyone! This is my first post as a new member of DVD Reviewer.

So far this year I have seen Toy Story 3 and Saw 7 in 3D.

I did not notice any real difference, i.e. both films did not appear to be what I would consider 3D. My wife also did not notice any real difference.

Several years ago at Disneyland Paris I saw `Honey, I Shrunk the Audience!` in 3D and many scenes really did appear to be 3D, i.e. appeared to be coming out of the screen.

Is modern digital 3D supposed to create the same effect as `Honey, I Shrunk the Audience!` or something very different?

Having not seen any yet myself I can`t really comment. That said I`m tempted by Jackass 3D.

was impressive as it added depth to the picture, and wasn`t all about things flying in your face, which was the cheap gimmick used in old 3d films, and was used in Saw 3D.

Modern films done well, are less about you ducking for cover as something appears like it`s about to hit you, it`s more immersive.

To me it`s more like surround sound which many ppl take for granted now. I can watch a film/tv just using the TV`s speakers, but depending on the film/programme, I put on the amp etc and get a better experience.

I have yet to see a film in 2-D that I wished was in 3-D and haven`t yet seen a 3-D film that really did what the hype would have you believe and thoroughly drew me in with a completely immersive experience.  Even Avatar seemed just as immersive as at the cinema and even more colourful on Blu-ray.

Thats what I want to see,more of the popping out of screen 3D effects, not impressed by 3D at all so far or £D as I like to call them,given the choice ill go see the non £D version of the films if avalible!

I`ve seen Avatar in 3D. I really enjoyed the effect, although the novelty wore off.. I think a big contribution was also the fact that it used a digital projector making the film clearer and sharper.

Check out Despicable Me in 3D. It`s great fun, with some nice 3d effects too. Well worth a watch, especially for the ladder bit during the end credits.

Ive seen a few 3D films now and its been a bit of a mixed bag, Isnt the whole `flying out of the screen` thing a bit tacky? I think the best use of 3D is very much like good CGI, ie you dont notice it, sounds daft to pay a premium for something you dont notice but Toy Story for example used very subtle 3D to give a nice depth to the picture, I dont remember any `flying out of the screen` moments at all, `Final Destination` on the other hand overused it, my favourite 3D part of Final Destination 3D was a plaster floating past in the pool sequence lol

Just think how bad older 3D films look in 2D, Freddys Dead, the final nightmare? Jaws 3D? the parts that were supposed to be the 3D parts stand out like a sore thumb, even watching Final Destination 4 in 2D you watch it thinking, yeah...thats was a 3D bit...that was...it spoils your enjoyment, the subtle 3D is the way to go imo as the films still have to work in 2D which is how most viewers will watch it on DVD/TV etc

That said Im looking forward to ducking 3D entrails while watching Saw 3D... :D

Saw 3D was a massive disappointment :( 3d wise and story wise. a bit of blood flies at you now and again, and some of the traps come out the screeen at you, no wow factor though :(

The jackass 3d trailer however in 3d looked great so we`re looking forward to seeing that even more now than we were.
