Modded X-Box question...

julianf (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 1st May 2003, 10:34

Hi - this is for The Ironduke and anyone else who can help...

The wife has said I can have an X-Box for my birthday. I know!! You heard me right. And it was totally out of the blue, I didn`t even know she knew what one was...actually...hang on - maybe she DOESN`T know what one is but knows SOMEONE ELSE who knows what one is. That would have to be a fella wouldn`t it? Maybe she`s feeling guilty about something? Hmmm, and she`s been whistling a lot lately...and if I let her get me one it`s like I`m accepting what`s going on, like I condone it!!! Oh why has she done this to me...?!?! Well, can`t turn an X-Box down eh ;-)

Anyway, what I want to know is how many games can be `stored` on the various sized hard-drives available with modded consoles for future playing without the original disk?

Also - and I`m talking about premodded.co.uk here - what are the differences between the models available (Pro, Lite & Cheap)?

Thanks
julianf (slightly uneasy about the whole thing now).

I wouldn`t go with the cheap chip for a start, you may as well get the Pro or Lite. You should e-mail them to find out the difference, as they`re very helpful. Personally I`d go with the Pro.

I think I`m right in saying... f you store games on the normal hard-drive in the box, the amount you can get on there depends on the size of the game. If its a DVD then chance are it`ll be up to 3.5gig, and being that the X-box is nearly 10gig (I think)... well you can do the maths yourself!

You`ll probably need an X-box owner to confirm all this, I`ve only tinkered around with a mates chipped X-box, though did look into getting one myself. If you get one from Premodded make sure you get the emulators put on as well - they`re free!

Hope that helps!

Thanks Ben, premodded did answer but said that standard X-Box`s only have about 5Gb...

Can anyone confirm one way or the other?

usually @ least a 8gig but most newer boxes come with a 20gb even the odd 40 or 80gb have been known my m8 has a 120gb seagate in his works well but remember you wont be able to play xbox live with a xb with a different hdrive in it

The standard xbox has 8GB of usable disk space. The 5GB mentioned is the available space on a standard E: drive, which is usable space on an xbox. many games are > 4GB so you can see it won`t last long if you want to place games on the standard hard drive. That`s why people fit larger hard drives (120GB is a good size).

I`ve got a cheapmod in my xbox (along with most of my mates) and I`ve had no problems with it. Unless you have a specific requirement to have more than one bios installed in your xbox then I would recommend the cheapmod (not to mention saving a few quid!).

I don`t know what your level of knowledge is like, but you may want to find out about "ftp" and networking your xbox with your PC if you want to get the most out of a modded xbox.

Thanks Les,

I`m afraid I know very little indeed about the Xbox...

Let`s say I had no intention of getting a bigger hard drive - what`s the point of having a modded box in that case given that I don`t know why I`d need more than one bios installed either...

many thanks

it`s got to be worth getting the bigger hard drive though, i mean think about it, yes it`s gonna cost about an extra £100 (120g) but that`s only like buying 3 games!!! the extra space + the mod chip lets you put games directly on your hard drive (blockbuster anyone) and the emulater scene is really hotting up hotting up imagine playing all those ace capcom arcade fighter`s anytime you want without having to shovel 50p in every 2 minutes. i know i`ll be getting mine modded as soon as i can save enough money up (pre-modded look like the best bet so if anyone has had good/bad experiences please let me know one way or the other)

HOPE THIS HELPS

Some of the advantages with a modded vs non-modded xbox are you can play "homebrew" software (in my case mainly emulators and xbox media player) and back your games up to your hard drive, so no more faffing around with discs, just switch the xbox and and select your game from the menu. There is also a multi region dvd player, so you don`t need to £20 M$ dvd movie kit. Xbox media player allows you to play mp3s, movies, digital pictures, add ons also allow you to play "shoutcast" radio stations from around the world (assuming you`re hooked up to the internet too). There`s loads of reasons to install a mod chip.

It`s not all good though, if you use xbox live and have a mod chip installed (and enabled) then you earn yourself an instant ban from the M$ live service :(

Either way modded or not you`ll want to get your xbox hooked up to your PC to allow you to play arguably the best xbox game (halo) online (via multiplayer), as it does not work with xbox live.

For some background reading, tutorials and all kinds of information xbox related I suggest you check out http://www.xbox-scene.com

Put quite simply, if you just want to play games and don`t fancy using your xbox for anything more than that then you probably don`t need a modchip, hard drive or any of that stuff, just buy your games and play `em! If you want to play mp3s, watch movies, back up your games, etc. then you should consider a modchip and larger hard drive.
