Watchdog: PS2 console failures

Colin Mac (Competent) posted this on Wednesday, 7th May 2003, 18:57

Did you watch watchdog the consumer program last night, talking about the large number of PS2 console failures in UK and USA on the PS2 just after the warrenty runs out.

It seems that you get a `disk read error` so the game disk will not then work, Consumers are having a hard time with Sony getting them to accept that there is a flaw in the design..

Anyone had this problem and how did they solve it?

Yeah I did Colin. I took it apart, cleaned it out, put some oil on it to make sure the laser is moving properly, wiped the laser with alcohol, and now it loads everything first time.

Sounds good Ben. Is it quite easy to do?

Could you list a quick dissassembly below, nothing fancy, just to get the idea how to do it, cheers.

You could try a laser cleaning disk before you decide to take the thing apart, these things have helped with a PC DVD-ROM drive that was iffy but after the clean worked 100%

Well I`m not really that good at technical things, so if I can do it anyone can!

If you turn the PS2 upside down, you will see four rubber squares that the PS2 stands on. Remove this and then undo the screws beneath them. There are also four other black squares (two on the middle and two near one end) which need to be taken off (prise them off with a srewdriver) and take out those screws too.

Now you can take the top off, so turn it back over carefully and lift the lid off. Make sure you don`t pull out the silver ribbon that is attached to the reset button (though you can put it back in again if you do). Now from here it is up to you how far you go, but I simply undid the four tiny screws on the top of the DVD drive and cleaned it out that way. You can go further and take off the screws for the connections at the back and the screws for the joypad ports, but you shouldn`t need to go that far.

Let me know how you get on!

Thanks Ben, taken it too bits as you said, cleaned up the mechanism and rebuilt, only took a few hours,

Have not seen any more `error messages` so far, Hope thats the answer.

Anyway, why do you always have two screws left over after your finished?
