Page 1 of The slim PS2......is it as good a machine as the old PS2?

Hello there,I`m asking this because I`ve had my old PS2 for a few years now and it needs replacing.I was thinking of getting one of the slim ones but I read in another post that there is no fan and is therefore liable to overheating.
Also I assume u can`t fit any hard drives inside?
Are there any other disadvantages? Is the disc drive u get in these as good and reliable as the best fitted in the old PS2 for example?

I`d be grateful for any info.

Well i believe the dvd remote ir sensor is built in. I have been very tempted to get one, but its the same old gubbins, different box.

I had a PS2 when they first came out and it gave me excellent service for a year before I decided to sell it because I wasnt really using it tha tmuch.

Anyway this Xmas I decided to go back and plump for one of these little slim units. They are tiny. Slightly bigger than a DVD case. They have IR remote sensor built in (I picked up an Official Sony Remote on eBay for £3.) The network adaptor is built in so it`s internet gaming ready, but as you say it won`t fit a hard drive, which deosnt affect me at all, as no games I want to play require one.

As for the fan, I have heard from varying sources, some say it does, some say it doesn`t, to be honest, if it does, it`s not noticeable from the outside!

Mine has just about been on 24/7 since Xmas and I have not had one issue regarding overheating, or for that matter, anything.

I have been very pleased with my unit, and have picked up some bargains on eBay, though if you`re looking to replace an old unit this probably won`t affect you.

Note that the multi-tap for the old PS2 is not compatible with the new one.

Ah....cheers for that info.I didn`t know about the built in network adaptor.That`s good news as I wanted to go online with it.Is the PS2 online community fairly large? I mentioned going online witht the consoles a few months back to a guy in Game and he said that almost no one was on the PS2 version.Is there still no subscription apart from the odd one like Everquest?

We got my son one for Xmas too, and have it online through my router. We`ve had no problems with it up to now either, although I read of the supposed lack of a fan, and overheating problems.

The built-in network adaptor is added value too, as it would have cost you an extra £20 to fit it before. You need an 8mb memory card to save game updates, and your network config files to as well.

There`s quite a lot of games out now with "NetPlay", he`s been playing SOCOM II and it`s pretty good, the graphics aren`t bad either. When he goes online it usually says there`s 3000+ players online (globally I think). You just pick a server, then a game to join. No subscriptions or anything like that. You are limited to 8 or 16 players in a game, depending on the game, but I guess it won`t handle as many as a PC at once.

We couldn`t get on the games at first, even though it was connecting. It turns out you have to register your Playstation online first (via PC) at http:www.ps2registration.com (the code number is on your network leaflet that comes with the PS2 (my son had nearly thrown it out, so watch it doesn`t get lost.

Once you`ve registered it, you can log in and get online ok. They send you some sort of pack with a disk you have to run to make your account permanent, as it`s only limited to a month at first it says (ours hasn`t arrived yet).

Hi, im glad ive seen something that is saying that the slimline ps2 is fine and dosent over heat.good on ya
