Modding original Xbox- new questions

1mills (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 5th March 2008, 10:33

Right I got mine sorted before with the installer discs that splintercell sent me ages ago and I`ve got Xbox Media Centre on there. I have come to the conclusion that I`m not making full use of it.

Basically I`ve never upgraded the hard drive, as I bought an external one at the time, but I`m currently near the limit of my 250gb MyBook so looking at new alternatives.

Thinking about whacking a 500gb hard drive in the old Xbox now.

Why I never really looked into it fully before, is because my Xbox will be unable to be wired to a computer or near a router so I was going to have to burn stuff on discs anyway, as I`d been told that streaming files wouldn`t really be an option. I`ve found out now that the Max Drive usb extender means I can plug in my external hard drive into the Xbox, so can transfer files that way.

I`ve just been looking around and must admit I was quite naive about what I could do on the Xbox Media Centre and have basically just been using it as an additional divx player.

Questions

1. Any recommendations on Hard drives and where to get from, taking into account that I`m pretty clueless with this stuff?

2. I am right in assuming I will be able to transfer the files from the external hard drive to the Xbox?

3. What else should I be doing? I`m thinking about transferring my music, tv shows (didn`t realise you could have covers for them :D :B ) and pre-installing some of the emulators I`ve got, but think maybe I could do more with it.

Anyone know any good guides as searching sends me usually to guides on soft modding, whereas I`m looking more for potential upgrades/ uses, but don`t know what to look for. :/

Edit- Additional info, I`ve got a spare Netgear wireless router if that could be used as a wireless connection for the Xbox somehow?

I hadn`t clocked on that I`ve actually got a laptop now so it`s not the problem that it was before. I`m sure that I`ve got a spare crossover cable hanging about somewhere aswell.

Top man for the links, will get onto the new hard drive in the next few weeks but I`m going to have a play about this weekend with the existing one just so I`ve got an idea.

don`t order that drive.......... it`s a sata, & you need IDE ;)

i used to connect mine up via a crossover cable, worked a treat for sharing xvids etc,, but you could also get a wireless adaptor for it, tho i dunno how cost effective that would be.

I`m actually going to be downgrading my xbox hard drive to a 30gb drive (i need the 120gb in there for summat else).

does anyone know what the minimum install size is for xbmc? I want to maximise the free space on there so would like to keep the OS down to a minimum.

i installed xmbc onto a mates stock 8GB drive so you won`t have any worries
with 30GB.

i recently installed a spare 40GB into the same xbox and also re-installed
xbmc onto that.

iirc, it only uses a few meg max anyway.

Not without an IDE to SATA adapter!!!!! The original Xbox only has IDE controller.

Chris is 100% correct, you should only use IDE drives in the Xbox. Furthermore if you exceed about 250/320GB you complicate matters for yourself. Seagate 200 or 250GB drives are ideal for the Xbox, but if you can get streaming working that is even better.

I have it running on a stock 8GB drive. I just upgraded to latest T3CH build and can see that is about 100MB on disc.
