Looking into buying a Sony PSP. Understand there are Region Limitations on UMDs that can be bought? Is there a way to "hack" a PSP to accept Region 1 UMDs?? Many thanks. Dave

I have a US PSP and despite changing all the settings in each version of firmware that comes out it`s never been able to play an R2 UMD. Rip it instead......
Assume you mean films?

FYI - Games have no region protection, only the UMD movies.
I`m still not sure why anyone would buy the UMD movies.
Its normally about the same price to buy the DVD, and there`s free software to rip DVDs and convert for the PSP so there`s little point having the UMD.
Plus if you buy the DVD you then have it to playback on the TV in better quality anyway :D

But to answer your question, it is possible to remove the UMD region protection only by installing custom firmware (ie hacked firmware). This isn`t for the technical novice though and requires someone else with an existing hacked PSP.

Really? Strange. Can`t say I`ve ever tried a US UMD movie in my PSP, but the region check controls in the options of the CFW I`ve seen (and have currently) says it can spoof or disable region controls...I just assumed it worked.

I remember when it was added and he (dark alex?) said he`d added it but didn`t actually have any discs to test it but it `should` work..... Doesn`t :-(
Can`t find anyone who`s got it to work - maybe you can?

Doubt it, I`ve always told people never to buy the UMDs and buy the DVDs instead :)

Will do a bit of digging and see what I can find though.

If you have custom firmware 3.52 m33 or above boot into recovery mode. You do this by holding the right back trigger when powering on. Go to configuration and enable the free UMD region setting. There is also a fake region setting which you can change to a region of your choice. While you are in the settings you could change the UMD mode setting to the Sony NP9660 no UMD driver so that you don`t have to have a UMD in to play your backups.

Punky - have you used that? I have - on various iterations and it doesn`t work......
Unless of course I`m doing something wrong....

I haven`t got any UMD movies from other regions (or this region) to try. I just assumed that it worked.

You could try and rip the movie yourself by pressing `home` or `select` (depending on what version of custom firmware you have) on the xmb screen and change the usb device to UMD disc and the exit. Put in your movie and connect the USB setting. Your computer should now be seeing the UMD disc instead of the memory stick. Drag the ISO to your computer to back it up and rename it if you want. Change the USB device back to memory stick and place the ISO movie into the ISO / VIDEO folder. You then should be able to mount the video from the same menu where you changed the USB device.

I don`t know if it works as I said above I don`t have any UMD movies.
