Is there any point pre-ordering anymore?

Bezzawezza (Elite) posted this on Friday, 1st January 2010, 16:18

I was about to pre-order Final Fantasy 13, Gran Turismo 5 and possibly Heavy Rain for the PS3 and was trying to figure out which was the best online retailer to do this with and guarantee them for release days (Amazon, Game and Lovefilm have all let me down over the years).
It then occurred to me that I am probably better off just leaving it and nipping into Tesco, Asda etc on release day. That way I may benefit from a price war and pick it up cheaper. The only benefit I can see for pre-ordering is to guarantee yourself a copy of the game but I can`t remember the last time I heard of a shortage of a game, consoles yes but not games unless you count Wii Fit.
The only other benefit would be for the additional content some retailers offer for pre-ordering but this content is, without exception imo, crap and just content the developers thought was too crap to put into the main game.
What do you guys think?

Totally agree. With most game and DVD releases these days, you`re better off popping into a supermarket on the day of release now.

I don`t tend to buy on release though, preferring to wait a month or two until they`ve dropped into the bargain bins...

I don`t know if some games catch them unaware, but there`s been quite a few games I`ve decided to buy spur of the moment that I have been unable to buy in past year or so.

UFC springs to mind by 5pm on release day it wasn`t in any shop at all. Wasn`t even that desperate for it, but once I`d played demo and decided I would get it from Asda and it was out of stock, it became a mission and the Tesco`s, Game, HMV etc etc all had no stock all weekend.

Depends how desperate you are to play the game on release weekend, but generally the chances are if you get from Supermarket you`ll get it at around the same price and provided you can get there early enough on release day, you`re guaranteed to get it and worst case scenario possibly play £3/4 extra???

I remember the good old days when ordering online meant that you got the game a week early. I used to be disappointed when I received stuff on release day.

Looking at recent examples such as Fifa 10 & CoD:MW2 they were a fair bit cheaper in the supermarkets than online.
Fifa 10 was selling for £27 (IIRC) and CoD:MW2 was around the same, but both had online pre-order prices of £34.99 and £38.99 respectively (again IIRC).
So there is something to be said for waiting.

However, sometimes you catch a good deal online (e.g. Tesco 20% off pre-orders) where I managed to pre-order Uncharted 2 for £32.

So in my opinion I wouldn`t necessarily bother with pre-ordering for most games, unless you see a really good deal.

Depends on what you are prepared to pay I guess....

Argos are currently taking pre-orders on Bioshock2 on both PS3 and 360 for a cracking £29.99!!!

seems a great price but who knows what`ll happen nearer 09/02/10?

I paid £30.99 via Game back when you could use internet vouchers on pre-orders and they had it up to pre-order for £34.99, i`ll get reward points and some quidco if it tracks too making a bit cheaper than argos but most sites are advertising it at £39.99 with an rrp of the usual £49.99.
