I think XP needs atleast 64mb of Ram but don`t quote me on that.

I had it running on a celeron 366 with a 4gig HD being used up solely by XP and another 40gig for everything else, I had 192mb of ram I think and it was always complaining because the virtual memory minimum was too low, but it worked OK.

I now have Duron 1.1ghz and 598mb ram and it runs like a dream.

The minimum specs for XP are given as:

Pentium 233MHz
64MB RAM
1.5 Gigabytes of free hard drive space

RAM seems to be the most important thing, much more important than the processor speed. As the specs suggest, you can install and run XP itself with only 64MB of memory, but in reality, 128MB is an absolute minimum if you want to do anything vaguely useful with it! 256MB (or more) would be a very good idea.

As for Home versus Pro, XP Home is a slightly cut down version with some of the more "professional" things taken out, like network admin stuff, security features (e.g. encrypted file systems), and dual CPU support. There`s a comparison chart on Microsoft`s web site showing what features each version has.

Look to see if there is any software included with the modem. Install this, restart PC, connect modem to PC then install drivers. This is what I had to do for my Alcatel ADSL Modem, your modem may be different though.

find out who manufactured your modem, go to their website and update to the latest drivers.

Note that your modem must be plugged in and *switched on* when you boot up winxp, otherwise it won`t find it (at least mine won`t)

Hope it helps
