Page 1 of Top 100 Britons
General Forum
You might have seen the BBC have done a poll of the public`s (well 30,000 of them) top British people. As with all these top 100 lists there will be strong opinions on who is in and (more so) who isn`t. Also what is the definition of a Briton, as Bob Geldof, Freddie Mercury and Bono are all on the list.
Anyway, here are a few who are on the list and some who are not!:
Julie Andrews, John Lydon, David Beckham, Tony Blair, Michael Crawford, Guy Fawkes, Bono, Boy George, Enoch Powell, Robbie Williams, JK Rowling, Mrs Thatch, etc
Peter Sellers, William Morris, Alfred Hitchcock, Peter Cook, Alec Guiness, Cary Grant, Quentin Crisp, Stan Laurel, Turner, PG Wodehouse, Hogarth, Elton John, etc
Whatdyareckon????
It`s all a load of bollox.
I mean, I`m not even on it!
Lol.
I thought this topic would come up.
I object to Irish people being in it, by definition they are not British, so Bono nor Bob Geldof should have appeared.
Maybe that just proves how stupid some people are??
Some have argued that The Duke of Wellington should not have appeared too as he was Irish.
However, in the 19th Century Ireland was an integral part of the UK just as much as Scotland was and still is.
And besides, without him we`d all be speaking French and smelling of garlic!
Anyway, I`m off for a baguette.....
RE: Top 100 Britons
Boy George! Is that the best they can do.
My vote goes for Fern Briton or Brian Cant or Peter Walker.
All the best,
The 42%er.
I don`t understand what `great` means or `top` for that matter
It seems that the definition of `Briton` is also quite vague as well does this mean somebody who has enhanced Britain even without being British born like Linford Christie and Germaine Greer or Trevor McDonald for instance or does it mean born within the British Isles with British parents or what about people like Richard E Grant and Joanna Lumely or Spike Milligan who may have been of British extraction but were born elsewhere? Does the Republic of Ireland and the farmers in Zimbabwe and the citizens of Hong Kong form part of this equation?
I agree with Jubbly when he disputes the validity of the poll because he says he’s not on it, neither am I
It`s a stupid poll really

Was Ainsley Harriot on it?
Isn`t this just another pointless media exercise in justifying its existence and dressing it up as serious/legitimate research?
What a load of twaddle.
Why is it a stupid poll?
It makes people realise what a great cultural heritage this country has and it`s been a good topic of conversation these last few days.
Which can`t be bad.
Pah, I agree with Andrew on this one. It`s all a load of twaddle, if it really made people realise what a great cultural heritage this country has it would only do so if Brian Cant was in the list.
Stop dumbing down the BBC and bring back Brian!
Bric-a-Brac and Choc-a-Block anyone?
RE: Top 100 Britons
Choca bloke checking in.
All the best,
The 42%er.
