Page 1 of digital camera advice

looking to buy my first digital camera, spending between £200 to £300 any advice on which one to buy.

if you go to http://www.pcpro.co.uk they have just done a test the lastest models this month. You may have to register. A couple on there they rate highly in your price range.

And shop around, I found that prices vary by quite a bit and some places give you free extras like memory cards, bags etc. You can never have enough memory cards especially if you want to use it on holiday and cant download until you get home.

I have seen some good todays special values on QVC the shopping channel, they give plenty of extras and a good price trouble is you have to wait for them to come up, I have seen some good value Richo cameras on there.

Some advice go for OPTICAL zoom forget Digital zoom a 3x optical is better then any digital zoom, also go for the highest pixels you can afford.

It does depend on what you want it for?

If you just want to e-mail pictures then one with 1 million pixels will do.

If you want one which will print a picture full A4 size then you should get one with over 3 million like my Kodak.

Other things to consider:

Self timer - I miss one on mine!
Zoom - Digital is crap but optical adds cost
Memory - If you will be away from your computer for some time you will need lots. Different kinds cost different. My MMC is one of the most expensive.
Printer - If you are going to print your own, is your printer up to the job?

I have recently bought one after looking around for ages.

I managed to get a 2nd-hand Olympus Camedia....

3 x optical zoom
2 mega pixels
6 flash modes

does the job. Had some pics printed 5*7 and they are excellent quality.

So you don`t need that many mega-pixels.

Have a Fuji MX2600, excellent camera.

2 megapixels
3x optical zoom
Various flash modes

As said, excellent camera, brilliant pictures - at least up to 5x7 size.

Ricoh that I tried was good for daylight use, but flash photography was quite poor.

and get the cheapest price you can , print the page and Jessops will/should be able to price match it.
Thats how I managed to save £60 on my Canon S30 (excellent camera)

My advice would be to buy the Kodak DX4900 (4 megapixel) @ £249.99 from Amazon. You will not need to upgrade if you get this as you`ll get excellent prints from 4" x 6" to 20" x 30".

Also the Kodak EasyShare CX4210 with docking station is a very good camera @£129.99 (2MP)

I`ve got a Nikon Coolpix 775 - it`s 2.1 megapixel and is really compact and easy to use. I`ve been extremely impressed with the image quality and had quite a few 6x4 prints made which look great. You can get one for about £250 but I`d recommend getting a bigger compact flash card too as you only get an 8meg card with the camera. I got the camera with a 64meg card and leather case for £299. A very good deal.
