How to preview an image in a folder?

If I go into, say, My Pictures folder and I single-click on an image...how do I get the folder to generate a preview of that image without double-clicking on it and opening it up?

One thing you can do is to set the contents of the folder to view as thumbnails. Right-click anywhere in the content field but not on a file, and hit view>thumbnails.
