PC Memory

Sercs81 (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 9th January 2003, 19:26

My PC has only got 128meg of memory. it`s running with a 40gig H/D and a 1.1 gig AMD Processor. It runs slow. Is this do to the low amount of memory? What would you suggest i upgrade to, 256 or 512??
Thanks in Advance
James

Depends what operating system you`re running and what you want to do. However, 128MB is low and with the price of memory at the moment, it`ll be the cheapest and easiest way of speeding your PC up - assuming it isn`t suddenly running slow due to some other (software) problem.
You`ll need to know how many spare slots you`ve got in your motherboard and whether your existing memory is in one/two sticks etc. to decide the most cost-effective way of upgrading. Otherwise you can end up `binning` your existing memory.

Cheers. I`m running XP. I was running 2000 and it was slow then. My mate at uni said i cud borrow his copy of XP and he said it should speed it up, but it hasn`t.

XP definitely needs more than 128MB of RAM to run smoothly! You should upgrade to at least 256MB, and preferably 512 to give you some breathing space.

The shop that used to be Time - Computer Warehouse or something - are selling 256MB PC133 memory for 25 quid according to their Sale flyer. Seems like a good price if its what you are looking for.

God yeah. 128MB with XP. Nooooo..

Get 512 and you`ll be very happy with the results.

I`d go for 512Mb - XP is a memory muncher. Just make sure you don`t mix your RAM - eg if your current 128Mb stick is PC100, don`t use it with PC133 - not only will the PC133 stick have to slow down to match the speed of PC100, but XP (in fact, any flavour of windows) will more than likely crash on a regular basis.

Another vote here for 512mb although my PC at home has 784mb. Before you order some more RAM though do check to see what configs of RAM you mobo will take, better to be safe than left with a stick you can`t use.

Cheers guys, i thought you wud go for that. i haven`t looked at the memory yet but if there are 4 slots, including the one with 128meg in already, would i be able to put a 128meg stick and a 256meg stick in? if theres only two, am i gona have to buy 2 256meg sticks and get rid of the 128 meg stick or wud it be cheaper to a 512 meg stick and run it with the 128meg stick, creating 640meg? how can you tell if it is PC100 or PC133?
cheers guys
